Background: Julia and Simon first met when they were students at Oxford. Both excelled in their anthropology class, and so their professor invited them to a summer of fieldwork in a Sudanese refugee camp. The refugees loved Julia and Simon’s willingness to listen and learn, but mistook them for siblings because of their frighteningly similar appearances. Admittedly, Simon and Julia did look alike, but that was all that the two seemed to have in common; each thought the other was stubborn and conceited. Midway through the summer, Simon was stricken with malaria, and the professor assigned Julia to watch over him in the medical tent. Julia’s stubbornness became useful, as she refused to leave Simon’s side. Inadvertently, Simon began to appreciate Julia’s stubborn streak, and she admired his tenacity in the face of illness.
Simon and Julia Paddington married one month before beginning graduate school; he in public health, and she in archaeology. We are now at the end of their graduate studies, and Julia has accepted a position as a professor of archaeology at a university. Simon intends to stay home in order to begin a family.
Year 1: Bonjour! To celebrate the end of graduate school, Simon and Julia take the Chunnel to France for a three-week vacation. They visit Paris, Bordeaux, and Avignon, but both agree that their favorite town is Lourdes. Julia is not religious, but she blesses herself with a dab of the holy water from Lourdes’ grotto, hoping to become pregnant.
DH: Simon (29) and DW: Julia (29)
Year 2: The Paddingtons are still childless, confirming Julia’s skepticism for religious superstitions. However, the year has not been entirely fruitless; Julia has accomplished significant work during her summer travels. She and Simon spend an entire month in Egypt, where they and a team of international archaeologists begin the excavation of a temple dating to the Ptolemaic dynasty.
DH: Simon (30) and DW: Julia (30)
Year 3: Julia and Simon have waited long enough to become parents. Before Julia traveled to Egypt, she submitted paperwork to begin an international adoption. Now, eighteen months later, the Paddingtons venture to Ukraine to meet their new son. On November 11th, they bring 2-year old Anatoly home. He is a brown-haired, brown-eyed little wonder who demonstrates incredible coordination and athleticism. Julia cannot wait to show him the world, and Simon cannot wait to sign little “Tony” up for football.
DH: Simon (31) and DW: Julia (31)
DS: Anatoly (2)
Year 4: Julia’s mother, Bea, is delighted to be a new grandmother. At 60, she is the picture of vitality and love, doting on and playing with her grandson. However, she develops a hacking cough and shortness of breath in January. For weeks, Bea is reluctant to admit that she has more than a seasonal cold; reality only hits when she looks into her bathroom mirror and notices her blue-tinged lips. She rushes to the emergency room and is diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer. Bea has never smoked, and so she blames her illness on her ex-husband John, who had a life-long tobacco addiction. Resentful of her wasted years of marriage, Bea withdraws from her family as she undergoes chemotherapy. When medical treatment fails, she enters hospice and dies on December 10th.
DH: Simon (32) and DW: Julia (32)
DS: Anatoly (3)
Year 5: Reeling from her mother’s rejection, Julia draws closer to her chosen family. The Paddingtons pursue adoption again, this time from Russia. On December 10th, the first anniversary of Bea’s death, Julia flies to Moscow to adopt 14-year old Katya. Katya was abandoned at eleven years of age and moved into an underfunded orphanage. Most adoptive parents overlooked Katya, preferring infants and toddlers who still had many developmental milestones to celebrate. But the Paddingtons were willing to overlook Katya’s age, because Julia wanted to unconditionally love a child who had little hope of finding a family. They petition to adopt her, and on December 30th, Katya and Julia fly home to England.
DH: Simon (33) and DW: Julia (33)
DS: Anatoly (4); DD: Katya (14)
Year 6: To celebrate Katya’s adoption, the Paddingtons give her a whirlwind tour of England. They travel through London, the English countryside, and several coastal towns. Katya’s English is still halting, but she has made enough progress to wholeheartedly express her love for fish and chips. At Katya’s request, Simon and Julia agree to return to the coast next year. Anatoly, surprisingly, is less enthused; he’s a picky eater who hates seafood and the briny coastal air.
DH: Simon (34) and DW: Julia (34)
DS: Anatoly (5); DD: Katya (15)
Year 7: In July, the Paddingtons welcome new neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Patel. Mr. Patel is a physician, and Mrs. Patel is an aspiring author. The couple has two daughters - seventeen-year old Lakshmi, and fifteen-year old Priti. Katya is happy to have new companions and schoolmates.
DH: Simon (35) and DW: Julia (35)
DS: Anatoly (6); DD: Katya (16)
Year 8: Julia hopes to rekindle a relationship with her father, John, who moved to Spain after his divorce. John is reluctant to meet his daughter and her family, but acknowledges that he should not have ignored his only daughter for so many years. Over Easter holiday, the Paddingtons travel to Barcelona to reconnect with John, who loses his curmudgeonly nature upon meeting his grandchildren. He takes Katya and Julia to his favorite restaurant for paella; later, he takes Simon and Anatoly to a football game.
DH: Simon (36) and DW: Julia (36)
DS: Anatoly (7); DD: Katya (17)
Year 9: For Anatoly’s eighth birthday, Simon purchases an iguana. Although Julia admits that it’s rather cute, Katya is afraid of it. Thankfully, she is beginning college in the fall. Anatoly plans to put “Mister,” his pet iguana, in Katya’s room. She probably will not visit often.
DH: Simon (37) and DW: Julia (37)
DS: Anatoly (8); DD: Katya (18)
Pets: Mister the Iguana
Year 10: John calls Julia to inform her that he is returning to England. The Paddingtons decide to move to be near him.
DH: Simon (38) and DW: Julia (38)
DS: Anatoly (9); DD: Katya (19)
