Help[Opinions] Mythological/Fantasy Name Sightings
I met an Echo today! She's a freshman in high school, so she's probably around fifteen or fourteen years old. She's a transfer student so she's only been around here for a couple weeks.
My second name sighting didn't actually occur recently, but in September at the start of the school year. There was a male student in one of my classes named Raistlin, but he dropped the course later. I didn't think of him again until I saw his name in the yearbook, and I wondered what the origin of his name was (especially since he had an odd surname). I did some digging via Google and discovered that Raistlin is apparently a name from a book series called Dragonlance, and that other parents have named their sons Raistlin as well! I'm not too fond of Echo (and I'm usually keen on female mythology names). Raistlin doesn't sound that bad, but I don't have any positive feelings toward it either. I guess it leaves me cold. I'm sure if I knew the books or the character I would have greater feelings (positive or negative) for the name.

Raistlin not a favorite of mine, reminds me of raisin. Echo is cool though.

I'd heard of Raislin as DP read the books, but I would never have used it. The character is not particularly nice either.
Echo I love, but I'd be hesitant to use it as a first name as she'd get so much teasing.

Raistlin seems very Fable - Fantasy - Elvish sounding to me. I like it though. I would never use it. I like Echo a lot. I've met a few Echos. All around late teens-early twenties. I thought it was a funny name when I first met someone with it, but it's grown on me in the years since my first meeting. I think, if I ever used it, I would use it as a middle name. Maybe not, though...

Echo ... not the world's greatest mythological heroine! Didn't do anything really except die for lurv. I'd rather drop the h and commemorate the author of Name of the Rose.
Raistlin looks highly made-up; I've never heard of Dragonlance, but it made me think of that other series with dragons in it, written by a teenager and turned into at least one film; I read some of the first one and was so bored I've forgotten its name. But as names go, Raistlin would fit in there perfectly.
I'm sadly ill-informed about actual American dialects, and I don't trust Hollywood or the TV, but might Raistlin not sound somewhat like Wrestling in some places? I fear it might, but I do hope not.

I heard people in Texas say "wrastlin'" (facetiously?) but never "wraistlin'" -- still, I think Raistlin could remind of wrestling. I sure thought of that. It also sounds like Race-lin, which is just ... weird. Like the OP, I am left pretty cold by it.

When I first heard Raistlin I thought it was Graceland or Gracelin, so there are definitely pronunciation issues.
