It depends on the length of the name. If it happened to be 3+ syllables and a nickname seemed inevitable, then no, I'd use it as a middle name instead of a first name.
I think Genevieve would be fine without a nickname. The only Genevieve I knew personally only went by Genevieve as far as I know.
