I'm re-reading The Chronicles of Narnia and this name struck my fancy. It is the name of a female character. However, I am at a loss at how to pronounce it. Would you think that it is: Air-uh-vis or Are-uh-vis? On that note, how much emphasis would you place on the "vis?"

I pronounce it ARA-vis; Ara as in Arabella and vis as in Mavis, or Elvis. I like it too.

I've always assumed A (as in apple) rather than Air or Are; I link the r to the middle syllable and get A-ruh-vis. I'd give -vis a minor emphasis, I suppose, more than the middle one anyway, but the main stress is firmly on the A.

I say AR-a-vis or AIR-a-vis. I think the "vis" could be "viss", like in English, or "vee", like in French.

I love Narnia. *sigh* And I like this name too, though depending on the pronunciation, it can seem more masculine.

I also developed a liking for this name when I read Narnia. I personally pronounce it "ah-RAH-viss", with a long A on the second syllable.

I'm inclined to pronounce it with a stress on the second syllable, but I've no clue how it's suppose to be pronounced.
It sounds nice, but I don't think it's usable for a child, but could work for a pet.

Aravis was probably my favorite character from the whole series! I usually pronounce it air-uh-VIS.

I've liked it since I red Narnia too. I prn ot Air-uh-vis. And even though Aravis is a female character I have always thought that it sounds masculine, and I prefer it on a male.
