It's got a lot of historical associations, and I like that.
I prefer Caroline, but I do like Charlotte.
However, I used to think "harlot" or "charlatan" when I saw it - the fact that it's more popular now has made those associations fade in my mind.
If I used it I'd choose Chasse as a nickname (a feminine version of Chas for Charles).
Better than Charley and Lottie imho.
