A lot has changed in the past five years for the Thompson family. Two years ago, Darcy and Justice were driving to a football game together when they were hit by a drunk driver. Justice was killed on impact, and Darcy spent two months in the hospital recovering. The family was devastated, but slowly recovered. They still aren't fully healed, but in the past year some joyful things have happened. Catie married her long-time boyfriend Henry three months ago. Wil and Bekah also had the opportunity to adopt a ten year old girl named Addie nine months ago. Addie was abused by her parents and struggles with some learning disabilities.
Catie graduated from college last year with her degree in Education. She now teaches in a nearby school district and loves her job--and her third graders. Her husband, Henry, is also a teacher, but he teaches secondary science classes at the high school. The two of them live in a small house about twenty minutes away from Wil and Bekah.
Darcy, 20, is in his freshman year of college. Due to the accident with his brother, he wanted to stay at home for awhile to recover both physically and emotionally. He feels really guilty that his little brother died and not him, but he's been working on overcoming that. Darcy wants to study sports medicine and work with athletes. He has also taken up rock climbing in the past two years and finds that it is actually a therapeutic activity for him.
Annie is 19. She is forever grateful that the Thompson family adopted her and her son. She has told Denver that she is his biological mother, but that he should look to Bekah to be his real mommy. Annie wants to have more kids again someday, but isn't sure she wants to be in a relationship just yet. She is also in her freshman year of college. She has decided to become a social worker, and is attending community college so she can be close to the family.
Violet is sixteen. Losing her older brother Justice was a traumatic event for her, because they were very close in age. Violet has found a way to express herself through music, and she is taking violin lessons at school and got a keyboard for her last birthday that she's teaching herself to play.
Eli, 14, was also strongly affected by Justice's death and the months afterward when Darcy was recovering. He used karate and horseback riding as his outlet, and is excelling in those sports. He wants to teach someday and has contemplated competing professionally in either/both sports.
Addie is ten. She just joined the family a few months ago, but feels like she fits in. She has confided in Annie most of all about her life, and has also bonded with Denver. She has severe dyslexia and struggles to read and understand simple sentences. Addie loves physical activity, however--riding her bike, running around outside, and playing kickball. Recently, she has taken up horseback riding with Eli and really likes it.
Denver is six. He is a bright, happy little boy. It confuses him sometimes why he has two mommies, but he's starting to understand that Bekah is the mommy who takes care of him and that Annie is the mommy who plays with him and acts more like his older sisters than a mom. He is in first grade, and is quite the popular child.
