Alexander is a great name, strong, masculine and timeless. You can't really go wrong with Alexander. I prefer it as a middle name though because it's pretty boring as a first name.
I hate the nickname Alex. It ruins everything that's great about Alexander.

I have three cousins (two of whom are sisters) who used the name Alexander as a middle name. A fourth cousin (a sister of the sisters) named her daughter Alexa.
