[Opinions] Margaret vs. Miriam
My husband and I are currently going back and forth with Margaret and Miriam. I prefer Miriam, he prefers Margaret. So: What do you guys think? Thoughts, ideas, namesakes -anything, really. Nicknames would be Meg / Mim but used rarely.
Replies
I do prefer Miriam "Mim" to Margaret, even though I love the nn Meg. I have a niece named Miriam who gets called Mim or Mimi (Mim-ee), so I suppose that helps me to like the name even more!
Tough one
... as I love both, but Margaret has the slight edge for me, as it has the better nicknames.
I love Meg and also Maggie.

I love them both. Based on the full names only, I pick Miriam.
Miriam hands down
I just love Miriam and have never cared much for Margaret, I know I'm in a minority from this point of view.

Margaret - I can see it on all ages. While Miriam I can only see on babies and old people.
I honestly prefer Miriam, but since you have a niece named Mira and the grandkids call your mother Mimi, I think that Margaret might be the better choice. You have lots of nicknames: Maggie, Meg, Meggie, Margie, etc. They're both good names (I prefer Margery to Margaret though).
I like both, however, I generally prefer the nns for Margaret over Margaret itself. So if a nn would rarely be used, I prefer Miriam (which is lovely). If she'd be called Meg most of the time, then I prefer that.
Oh, just realized you have a niece named Mira. Were it me, I'm not sure I'd go with Miriam. Then again, if you don't live close to one another, it could work. My sister has an Emily and her s-i-l asked "permission" to name her dd Emma. My sister gave it since they live so far apart.

Margaret
Miriam is lovely but I prfer all the nickname options of Margaret. Theres one to suit every personality. My favourites are Maisie and Maggie, but Meg is gorgeous too.
Margaret hands down. Mim sounds a bit silly to me, even as a nn.

Miriam.
Miriam is very lovely, but rather ethereal for a living person. It needs the rustle of silk and the texture of lace and the light of candles shining on pearls to come into its own.
Margaret can play it both ways! Any way, in fact, from cashmere to calico, indoor elegance to outdoor energy. I think I've talked myself into Margaret, though Miriam would work better with my ln. So, try them both with your ln and see which you both prefer.
Of course, there's always Margaret Miriam, or Miriam Margaret ...

I love both. Margaret is on our to-use list, but because it's a family name. I like the sound of Miriam much better -- it's melodic but not frilly. I like the biblical Miriam (sister of Moses) well enough. As nicknames go, I think Meg is nice but dislike Mim. If I had a Miriam she'd be Miri for short.
Between the nicknames I would have to go with Margaret - Meg. But otherwise I would be choosing Miriam = Mira or Margaret = Margot.
Just between the full names I am so on the fence but today I am feeling Miriam.

Unfortunately, they wouldn't see each other very often.
I live quite far away from my family now. Plus Mira would be at least 14 years older than the baby - they might never know each other that well.

I like both, but I prefer Margaret with the nn Maggie.
I also like Miriam with the nn Mira.
Much prefer Miriam than Margaret (but also much prefer Meg than Mim...)
I have no use for Margaret at all. It feels so stuffy and frumpy to me.
Miriam, on the other hand, I love. Old, but new (or at least not overused) with the adroable Miri as a nickname option. Mim is cute too though.

I have a niece named Mira
So Miri is out.
So Miri is out.
If you have a niece named Mira then I think Miriam is out altogher. Unless you niece lives miles away and you never see her.
I've never been able to warm up to Margaret to be honest. It's always struck me as cold and stiff. Interestingly enough, I really like Marguerite, and I love Margo. I also like Meg.
Miriam is beautiful. It's a familiar name, but it's not too popular.

I'd go with Miriam, nn Mimi. Or if you went with Margaret, you could call her Maisie or Margie, maybe.
Mimi is what the grandkids call my mom. :-D
It's cute - but it would not work it here.

Miriam! Its more unique. I would go with Miriam Margaret as a combo for compromise - plus, it's adorable! As for nn, I like Meg, but for Miriam I love Mimi or Mira.
Margaret
I love both, but I've always just liked Margaret a little more.
Margaret Miriam?

While I like Margaret, Miriam seems to be more pretty and have more personality. Meg is a better nickname than Mim, in my opinion; I prefer Miri.
To be honest, I never really paid attention to Miriam until a little while ago. I'm Catholic with a Jewish grandfather, so I learned about the character, whom I admired, but it wasn't until I saw the animated movie Prince of Egypt that I started liking the name. I think it was seeing an actual person (well, animated) named that made me consider it. I'm beginning to realize this happens with quite a few names: I see it on someone and it clicks.
Long story short... Miriam is beautiful. Also, Prince of Egypt is a very good movie.

I've never been able to warm up to Miriam, probably because I've never met one.
Miriam, but...
...I wouldn't use the NN Mim. Reminds me too much of Mad Madame Mim from "The Sword in the Stone"; great character, but maybe not the type of association you'd want for a little girl.
I'd go with Miri as a NN, or Mira. I know you already have a niece named Mira, though, so that's out. Maybe Minnie could work?
I like Margaret because it's a classic, but it's a little dowdy to me. I keep thinking of dumpy, middle-aged women with gray hair and too many cats. :P

lolol - I could easily end up like that
Especially if my marriage didn't work out.
Minnie is really cute - I'm glad you brought up Mad Madame Mim.
