Things between Joseph and Diana have been as horrible as ever. Joseph goes to parties at Court almost every single night, usually arriving at their bedchambers in the early hours of the morning. He feels that his marriage was meant to take away his independence, so his only way to respond to that is by partying harder than ever. From day one of their marriage, it has been clear to Diana that Joseph does not wish to be married to her and is only using her for his own pleasure. One night, about a week after their wedding, Joseph said to Diana "The only good thing about marrying you, is that now I get to sleep with you." Diana feels hopeless and trapped in her loveless marriage. For the first months, Diana's only happiness came from her cousin Valentina. She was the only one Diana felt she could trust.
A few months after her wedding, Diana discovered she was pregnant. She had hoped that this unborn child would be Joseph's catalyst to change. During the pregnancy, Diana took care of the unborn baby as best as she could. She finally gave birth in January to a healthy, happy, baby boy. Joseph was thrilled at first to have a son, and immediately named the boy after himself. Diana took this to mean that Joseph would finally start to accept responsibility. She was sadly mistaken. It was rumored that while Diana was giving birth to her son, Joseph was in the bedchamber of an unnamed young lady. At the celebration of little Joseph's birth, his father (Prince Joseph I) had passionately kissed his mistress, one of Diana's ladies in waiting, in front of the whole Royal Family and Court. Humiliated, Diana retired from the party early and spent the rest of the evening with her son.
Since her cousin Valentina just had a boy the same age as little Joseph, Diana has been spending all of her time with Valentina, little Joseph, and Valentina's baby Thibault. She envies the love that Valentina shares with Philippe, even though she knows that they are meant for each other. Even though Diana can not deny that there is some rivalry between Prince Philippe and King Leopold, she does not believe that Philippe would ever plan to overthrow his brother. However, if it came down to it, Diana would side with Prince Philippe. Not only is he the husband of her beloved cousin, but Diana harbors resentment toward the King because as far as she knows, her horrible marriage is all his fault.
One night while Diana was asleep, Joseph barged into their room in a drunken rage, after losing a great deal of money gambling at a party. Diana awoke startled and afraid, seeing Joseph throw things around the room and yelling. After just a few seconds of this, he passed out on the bed. The next day Diana went to Philippe, begging him to help her. She begged him to talk some sense into Joseph and to do whatever he could. Diana fears for not only her own safety, but her sons safety as
well.
