Help[Opinions] A Nickname Change, WDYT?
I've been thinking about changing my nickname lately.
You see my name is Stephanie but I generally go by Stevie as that was the nickname my parents and sister choose for me when I was born (it's on my birth certificate and everything). And while the nickname Stevie served me well for most of my life. I'm kind of feeling like I have grown out of it a bit, unfortunately I never really grew into Stephanie in the process.
So I was thinking about it the other day and I figured, with all of the nicknames available to the name Stephanie, why should I be stuck with just the two?
Anyways for a long time I was thinking about changing my name to Anie/Annie, but since I already had an Aunt Anne it seemed like it would be a bit weird. Then I figured out that I could use the nickname Effie.
It seems to mean "well-spoken", which fits me perfect as I'm a writer, YouTuber and want to maybe do some acting. Plus my great-grandmother was also called Effie. And after watching the British TV show, Skins, I realized that it could work in a modern day setting without much trouble.
But I'm not sure.. I think online and family I'll always be Stevie. But I'm starting a new college next week. I could easily change it then.
I'm really just looking for some outside input, so:
What do you guys think? Does Stephanie with the nickname of "Effie" work without too much of a stretch? Would it be okay to change?

It works, and I think Effie is a very natural nn for Stephanie because the main accented syllable in "Stephanie" is "Eff". Steph / Stephie / Stevie makes sense, and Fannie makes a little sense but wouldn't be 'natural' unless the name was pronounced ste-FANN-ee. But Effie is just as natural as Steph IMO.
As long as you don't mind having 2 nicknames (your family will probably stick to Stevie, for a while anyway), go for it.

My hope is that people will think that it is just Stephie shortened, and hence won't give me much trouble about it where it came from. Because out loud it sounds like Stephie minus the "st" sound.
Yeah, I'm probably going to commonly called by three names for a while. Stephanie or Stevie by my family, Stevie by my old friends, Stevie and/or Effie by my internet friends and Effie by my new ones. xD Though generally everyone should know that my full name is Stephanie so it shouldn't cause much confusion. (Especially when it comes to Facebook. Right now I'm just very grateful for the Alternate name option as they can easily find me by either name as long as they know my last name. xD)

IMHO Effie is not really a natural nickname for Stephanie. Fannie is more natural than Effie. It also seems artificial / affected to me, because it should be fairly obvious that Effie was mostly considered a frumpy old-lady-name at the time you were born, but it is more fashionable seeming today. So, no, I wouldn't if I were you, unless it is purely for theatrical / pseudonymous purposes and people wouldn't call me Effie to my face.
Personally I think Stevie is cool, and Stephanie itself is too, and Stephanie does not really need to be shortened anyways.

Your right, it isn't a natural nickname, but really most people called Stephanie naturally get there name shortened to Steph, and not anything else. And I despise Steph, it's the reason why I went back to Stevie in the first place. Plus I think most people would agree that in this day and age Fannie is a thousand times worse than Effie.
I also agree with your last statement, both names are cool and Stephanie, under normal circumstances doesn't need to be shortened. However, my last name happens to be longer than Stephanie, so I think you could understand my reasonings behind wanting a different, shorter nickname.

Do it! It's super cute and not too much of a stretch at all. I like it. And now's the perfect time.
By the way, since when can you specify a nickname on a birth certificate? I've never heard of that.

I don't think its on there as a nickname, but in the first name slot it says "Stephanie "Stevie"". So legally I can go by either but on anything official (School files, credit cards, social, etc.) it always says Stephanie.
