I feel the same way. I used to equate it with the color mauve (which I pronounce as "mahv") -- a color I still can't stand.
But I've been working on liberating Maud and so have tried to link it in my mind with historic Matildas. Queen Maud and King Stephen duking it out in Norman England is a wonderfully historic frame of reference. :-D
While I can't say I love it yet, I'm getting there.
