[Facts] Ethan
Does anybody know what happened to cause Ethan to gain such popularity recently?
In the US, Ethan has always been an obscure name, but it's been extremely popular since the 1980s.
In 1988, it was ranked #263. In 1989, it was #87. I figure something must have caused this jump in popularity and especially in 1988 but I'm not sure what has made Ethan such a popular name recently (movies, TV shows, etc.)

A lot of this is because the name fits in with fashionable sounds of the moment (starts with a vowel, ends with -n.)
However, in the late 1980s there were actually TWO television shows in the USA that featured characters named Ethan.
The TV western Paradise featured Ethan Allen Cord as its main character.
And Ethan was the name of a child character on the popular 1980s TV series thirtysomething.
The combination of those two shows is probably what caused the sharp jump between 1988 and 1989.

The actor Ethan Hawke, who got his big break in 'Dead Poets Society' in 1989, probably helped the name out, too.
