Fiona comes from a wealthy aristocratic family in Portugal. Ephraim was born and raised in Florida to Cuban immigrant parents. They met at a club in Miami, when Fiona was there on vacation. After marrying in a gorgeous wedding on the beach, she and Ephraim move to a mansion in Peru-- their wedding present from her parents.
Year Two Event: Family Affair - Chronic Illness
After miscarrying twice in her first year of marriage, Fiona's doctor tells her it may be impossible for her to carry a pregnancy to term. She and Ephraim begain investigating the option of using a surrogate, but they are discouraged by their options. In the next two years, she will miscarry three more times.

They buy a pet dragon named Paolo.
Year Four Event: Family Affair - Long-Term Goal
Ephraim has always been a bit of a fitness nut, and as part of her strategies for coping with her fertility problems, Fiona started running and biking with him. This year they complete their first triathalon together.

They are surprised when they are contacted and told they have been approved to adopt a five-year old boy in India. Ravi Ashoka has been raised in an orphanage since the age of two. He is withdrawn, developmentally delayed, and speaks no Spanish. In their therapy sessions to help Ravi understand that he is a part of a family, Adele has a breakthrough and finally begins to process her parents' deaths and accept Javier and Ravi as her brothers.

After a long year of hard work, Fiona, Ephraim, Javier, Lucy, Adele, and Ravi reward themselves with a family trip to Portugal to visit Fiona's family. It is the first time Javier has been on an airplane. Ravi is terrified because when he sees the airplane, he believes he's being sent back to the orphanage. Eventually he is able to relax and enjoy himself. Fiona's family are thrilled to meet Lucy, Adele, and Ravi for the first time.

The family returns home to find Ephraim has been promoted again-- and transferred to Australia! They buy an house outside Sydney. Luckily, all of the children are fluent in English, but they still find it a difficult adjustment.
Year Twelve: Pet
Adele is eighteen now and planning to study library sciences. As a housewarming present for her first apartment, her parents buy her a parrot. She names her Fairuza.

Fiona begins to feel tired and rundown, with a stomach virus she can't shake. After a few months, she finally goes to the doctor and finds out she's five months pregnant! She is terrified she will miscarry again, but she is able to carry the baby to seven and a half months. Eve Ruby is hospitalized for several weeks, but she suffers no long-term complications. Eve has curly auburn hair, like her mother, and green eyes.
