Katya was shocked to see little Gerry stealing fruit from the family, but quickly realized that he couldn't survive any other way. She took in Gerry. Alex reluctantly agreed, but didn't really accept Gerry until he learned Russian and mostly forgot German (his parents' native language before they died).
