Lately, Anna has been getting called boring, and I remember that in the past this board almost unanimously agreed that Anna was better than Ana. So...
What are your current thoughts on Anna and Ana?

Like both, would use Anna

I used to prefer Ana over Anna by a landslide, because of the manga series Strawberry Marshmallow (the name of one of the characters). It was even on my PNL (guh!). Then i added Anna to the list. Now i've gone off Ana, and much prefer Anna.
However, i used to really hate the way Anna in any form sounded. Now i like it alot, but i'd never use it.
I don't know anyone personally named Anna but this is the name of one of my teacher's daughters and the newborn sister of this girl my mum knows. But i can name a gazillion celebrities with this name, most of them Eastern European (i'm into that kinda thing).
I don't think it's that boring.

We don't use Ana here because we haven't got a large enough Spanish population and our Portuguese girls seem happy with Anna.
I know more Anna people than I could comfortably shake a stick at, and not a single Ana. Accordingly, Ana never crosses my mind.
I prefer the look of Anna and find Ana looks incomplete. But I find Anna drab and commonplace compared to the steady radiance of Anne.

Anna's da best. Cute. It's like a little penny. My sister's name is Anna. I've known, like, a billion, and I know one who spells it Anna and pronounces it Ana.
I really dislike the pronunciation and look of Ana. It's trying to shrink itself down to nothing. As if the two syllables of Anna weren't simplistic enough it's got to slim itself down even further. It's an anorexic name. And I'm not ¡ust saying that cuz it's the abbreviation for anorexia...

Wow. I've been anorexic (no longer fit diagnostic criteria) and I don't make the connection cause I pronounce Ana as in anorexia the same as Anna (my name) and Ana the name as AH-na. I never knew that other people really connected it that much.

I don't think Anna is boring, but I do think it's definitely popular enough to be off-putting. I wouldn't pronounce Anna and Ana the same way, so I don't really see them as interchangeable spellings like Katherine/Kathryn or something like that. I know 2 Annas and 1 Ana (but I think her name is actually short for something else).
I prefer Anna, probably just because that's the form I'm more familiar with, and it fits with the type of names I generally like.

I like Anna better. Ana is a really nice nickname but I think it's much too nicknamey to be a full name.
I can only think of two Annas that I know at the moment and one Ana, but all of these people are distant acquaintances.

I love it and while it is a bit plain I don't find it boring at all. Ana is used here, so that's the spelling I prefer. I know numerous spelled Ana (all ages and it's my grandmother's name so I plan to use some form of it to honor her, currently I'm liking Ana-Sofia best) and none spelled Anna.
Ana is one of the most consistently popular names here, it was in the top 5 when I was born in 1983 and it was #3 in 2009 and it was very popular in my grandmother's generation. We're a Catholic country so Marija and Ana (and Anamarija and Marijana) and it's derivatives have a very prominent place.
