Help[Facts] Obelia
One of my baby name books lists the name Obelia as a Greek girls name meaning 'needle'. However, when i tried to research more about this name, all i could find that it was a type of protozoa!
Not only that, but i coudn't find any Greek vocab words for 'needle' that vaguely resembled Obelia.
Does anyone have any further information on this name? (Like if it actually means 'needle', etc...)

Hi there!
The closest I can think of is the Greek word obelias (ὀβελίας) meaning skewer. The word obelisk is certainly a cognate of that.
I have seen no evidence however that this was ever used as a personal name. Some children are indeed pricks, but would you ever name your kid thus?

It was listed in one of those slightly dodgy baby-name books. It could have been just an English name based on a Greek word. But it's kind of weird that it's also the name of a protozoa.
