[Opinions] Chaney
Is anyone familiar with this name? I am guessing it may be a nickname for Charlotte or Charlene but wonder if it could possibly be a common nickname for forms of Christine?I have an ancestor documented in census records as Harriet C. and family records giving her name as Harriet Christeny or Christenia. The folks who wrote the records were not well-schooled, so their spelling and grammar can vary widely from norms.I've got information from a grave marker for a Chaney who was born the right year to be Harriet C. and died 1916 (family record said about 1915) and she's buried at the same cemetery where her husband Isaac S. was buried nine years later. My gut tells me it's her, but proper genealogical protocol requires more evidence.

My name book lists Chaney as a male and female name.
For a male it gives meaning French 'oak tree' and a transferred last name.
For a female name it's classified as a nickname for Chandler.

You should post this on Facts. You're more likely to get useful responses, and besides, Facts is archived so if anyone else ever looks up Chaney they can find the thread. =)
