Four years after the tragic death of little Princesse Victoire, the royal family rejoices at the eldest Princesse's, who has grown up lovely and intelligent, engagement to the handsome Léopold, duc de Colignac. The duc's mother, the shrewd and ambitious Duchesse, arranged the marriage right after Victoire's death, when she knew that the King and Queen were vulnerable--she feared they would not accept otherwise, being that Princesse Marguerite far outranked her son, and the marriage really would only be politically advantageous for their family. Louis and Eleanora were hesitant at first, but after the young couple met and seemed to get along very well, Eleanora convinced her husband to allow them to marry--their children deserved the same kind of marital happiness that they had had. Louis finally agreed, but vowed to keep an eye on the duchesse--she had gained an inordinate amount of power for a woman after her husband's death, and Louis didn't trust her.
