When Philippe was two and a half, Eleanora was delighted to find out she was pregnant once more. However, the winter during the last few months of her pregnancy was one of the harshest in recorded Merteuil history, and soon pneumonia ran rampant through the castle, taking the lives of several servants. Louis and Eleanora fretted about not letting their children be exposed, especially Victoire, who was often ill and took sicknesses-especially respiratory illnesses--the hardest. It became a near fervor for Eleanora, who only allowed Victoire to leave her chambers to eat meals, inspected her governess and handmaid daily for signs of illness, and hired special entertainers to keep the little girl happy.
One day, however, Victoire begged her nurse to let her play outside in the snow with her brothers and sisters, and cried bitterly when her nurse refused. However, when the nurse wasn't looking, Victoire grabbed her cloak and snuck out to play. The whole castle was whipped into a frenzy looking for her, with even Eleanora herself, hugely pregnant, joining in the search. However, seeing her daughter look so happy playing with her siblings, Eleanora didn't have the heart to punish her.
However, her worst fear did come true: not a week later, Victoire was deathly ill: she was pale and weak, her little body wracked with coughs. Eleanora fought to be able to keep a vigil by her daughter's bedside, but her husband forbade her to--he didn't want her to also catch the illness in her delicate state. After holding on for two weeks, little Victoire died in her sleep.
Louis and Eleanora were devastated, as were all of her siblings, especially Adrien, who had a haunting, empty look of despair on his face for months. Two months after Victoire's death, Sophie was born, healthy and squalling--it was a difficult labor, both physically and emotionally, and intensely bittersweet. Eleanora kissed the little girl's forehead, and told her husband in no uncertain terms that she was never giving birth to another child again. To bring a little soul into the world just to watch it waste away was something she couldn't bear to do again.
