In the Empire of Melqior
Round 1:
Bram was slightly stunned when he was told the news. Not only had his King, Queen, and all five of their children passed away from the mysterious epidemic, but so had his mother, the King's younger sister. He was all of a sudden he was the one to inherit the throne of Melquior. The next thing he knew, he was being crowned and had advisors after him at all hours of the day and night. He was no where prepared for this. By the time he was born, the King and Queen already had 2 healthy children and there was no need to think that he might need to be trained to inherit the throne. His advisors badgered him about many different issues, and some he could see were plots to help out those nobles who suggested them.
However, there was one thing all of the advisors agreed upon, he needed to marry and provide heirs to give an image of stability to the Empire. After going over countless lists of eligible and connected females from within the Empire and without, and meeting many of them briefly, he chose his childhood sweetheart the Marchesa of Anburn. This proved to be very wise of him, as Zahara had a mind that was born to see through the political twists and turns of the court and Empire. And, as the two were rapidly falling in true love, Zahara found herself helping Bram more and more. With the rapid series of changes in the Empire recently, no one can tell what is around the corner. However, Bram and Zahara now seem ready to tackle the challenges ahead.
Round 2:
Just 4 weeks after Bram and Zahara were married, Amirah Zahara became mysteriously ill. At first, the royal priests worried that it might be related to the epidemic that was still running rampant in the outskirts of the Empire. However, her illness never progressed beyond the fatigue. After 3 weeks, she was strong enough to resume some of her normal activities. Two month later, and she was now throwing up every meal. She worried that she was once again sick, and not wanting to scare her husband, she kept it to herself. However, after the first three months, she knew that she needed to get help. When she went to the priests, they were overjoyed. They told her that this wasn't an illness, but a pregnancy! The Amirah was going to have a child!
The pregnancy progressed as normal, but Amirah Zahara grew weaker the further along it went. By the end, she was confined to bed. She delivered a healthy baby boy 4 months to the day after their wedding anniversary. And while she was still confined to bed rest, she was regaining strength. Amir Bram was so proud of his first born son, but worried over Zahara whom he had grown to love. However, the priests assure him that Amirah Zahara would be fine so long as she was given the time to regain strength. The Empire is starting to feel a peace, and much of that is because Amir Bram is calm and collected, Amirah Zahara has proven herself strong and there is a crowned Prince in the family and every reason to believe that more will be forth coming.
Round 3:
The royal physicians fear that Amirah Zahara is taking too long to recover. They are worried that her strength isn't back, even though 6 months has passed since the birth of Prince Ezra. They tell Amir Bram and Amirah Zahara that they mustn't try for any more children until after Ezra's second birthday. They explained that the Amirah was still a young woman, and that the two would have plenty of time to secure the line. However, if they rushed into things too soon, the Amirah could well lose her life during a pregnancy. Reluctantly, Amir Bram agreed. It wasn't until they pointed out to Amirah Zahara that she would leave her young son without a mother that the Amirah agreed also. Unfortunately, the only method the physicians would allow the Royal couple to use, was abstinence. This did not please either the Amir or Amirah.
It was with great joy that the Royal family celebrated Prince Ezra's second birthday. And with even greater joy that Zahara and Bram celebrated privately that night. A few months later and Amirah Zahara had that familiar urge to throw up all of her meals. This time, however, there was a healthy glow as she grew bigger with the child. The two were overjoyed to welcome a daughter to their family, and the Empire was just as thrilled. The little girl was named Wren for the birds the Amirah heard as she was giving birth to the girl.
Breastfeeding her new daughter helped the Amirah regain her slim figure, plus kept her body from allowing another child to bloom within her. However, the Princess was weaned to a wet nurse shortly after her first birthday, and Amirah Zahara soon found herself pregnant again. The time for the baby came, and went, and Amirah Zahara was still pregnant. First one week went by, and then two. By four weeks, the royal physicians were worried that the birthing would kill the Amirah or that the baby would arrive dead (even though he kicked constantly). However, five weeks after the baby was due, the Amirah went into labor. It was quick, but very painful. A healthy, and large Prince Zayn was announced to the Empire. Everybody rejoiced, and the Royal couple was thrilled with their growing family. It seemed that as their family grew, so did peace within the Empire, and that was a good thing.
Round 4: (WARNING - Tabby has a sad story that may distress some - read at your own risk)
Shortly after Zahara was married, her youngest sister, Tabitha "Tabby", became engaged to King Daichi of the Kingdom of Polyduques. None of the family liked the arrangement, as the Kingdom of Polyduques was very strictly patriarchal, and Tabby would have to conform to their rules, being Queen, even more so then the average woman. However, ever since Zahara became Amirah, Tabby also wanted the power and prestige of a high and noble title. Having to submit to some silly customs didn't seem like a problem.
Once Queen of Polyduques, Tabby was hardly allowed out of the palace grounds. She was strictly monitored in what she wore, where she went, and what she did. Even worse, her husband had no interest in her whatsoever. It turns out that King Daichi had no interest in any woman, and couldn't even preform with one. After many failed attempts at consummating his marriage with Tabby, he finally had his lover preform the act.
Tabby became pregnant after a month, and then was even more restricted in what she could do. She had no real friends or companions, and was completely miserable. The Polyduques have a very strict birthing regimen, that includes everybody being completely silent. When Queen Tabby couldn't stop crying out, she was gagged and then tied to the bed. The birth was hard, and Queen Tabby was confined to bed without company for the first three months.
On top of all of that, the baby was a girl and Tabby was blamed for not producing an heir to the throne. Tabby became very depressed, and started losing weight. However, as she had no friends or anybody who cared for her, no one noticed. Two years later, the King's lover once again started visiting Tabby's bed chamber. King Daichi watched, and sometimes joined in with his lover. Tabby was horrified and more lonely then ever.
Once again, she became pregnant. Once again, the pregnancy was hard. This time, it was even harder then last time. This time, as her daughter was born, Tabby quit breathing. As she was once again gagged and tied down, no one even noticed until an hour later. King Daichi, seeing that the child was a girl, ordered the brats to be packed up as quick as possible and sent back to their family.
Because the Empire of Melqior was closer then the province of Anburn, the children were brought to the Amir. The wet nurse and steward told the Amir and Amirah Queen Tabby's story (separately, as the wet nurse told the Amirah in the nursery, while the steward told the "official" version to the Amir in court). Amirah Zahara, just a few months before, had given birth to Princess Enid and was still nursing. She was determined to do for her sister's children, and begin nursing the infant along with her own. Amir Bram was skeptical at first, but after hearing the wet nurse's version of events, he agreed to adopt the children.
They would be part of the Royal family, and officially Princess. However, they would only inherit if none of his own children could do so. Because of this, they are officially addressed as "the Gentle Princess" instead of "the Gracious Prince/ss". The difference is simply one (Gracious) is meant for the Amir's and Amirah's children, and the other is for nieces/nephews in line for the throne. This keeps everybody happy. Although, like every other Prince and Princess in the Royal household, everybody drops the first part and sticks to Prince or Princess except on the most formal of occasions.
The infant, who didn't even have a name yet, was named for her mother, but nicknamed Tibby to differentiate her. The steward was sent back to the Kingdom of Polyduques, with thanks for sending the children to their aunt. A secret letter was sent to King Daichi, letting him know that Amir Bram knew the parentage of the girls, and expected that the King would never try and regain custody for any reason. The wet nurse, who had no family in Polyduques whom she wished to keep (her only child, a son, had died and her husband blamed her - only her position in the King's household had saved her from being beaten nearly to death, as was his right), stayed on to help with the children. The Empire was told of the adoption, but the circumstances behind it were kept secret. The Empire was pleased that their Amir and Amirah were so kind hearted. Plus, it didn't hurt to have a growing Royal family, as who knows what might happen in the future.
Round 5:
With Princess Enid's and Tibby's first birthday over, Amir Bram decided that it was time for him to tour the Empire and see in person all of his lands and peoples. Amirah Zahara knew that this was a good idea, but insisted that the whole family come with. She insisted that the Empire was relatively at peace. Also, that it would do the people good to see their Royal family, whole again after the tragedy of mystery epidemic of 15 years ago. As usual, Bram knew that his wife was correct. And so, an eight month tour of the Empire was planned, mapped out, and announced to the Empire. The Royal family would be back just in time for the Autumn Celebration.
The first five months of the tour went off better then expected. Everybody within the Empire was thrilled to see their Amir and his family. And then the attack happened. The Royal family was near the border of Polyduques when a swarm of Murana assassins attacked the Royal family. The Amir and Amirah were quickly surrounded, along with Zane, Belle, Enid, and Tibby.
However, Ezra and Wren were off on their horses and the Royal guards couldn't get to them. Luckily, they didn't seem to be the target, as only one of the Murana went for them. Ezra pushed Wren behind him and drew his sword. After blocking two strokes from the assassin, Ezra knew he wouldn't last long. He was too young, too weak, and too inexperienced. Luckily, one of the honor guard saw the peril of the two young children and shot a crossbow bolt into the assassin, killing him. The remaining assassins fought like 3 men each, but as they were outnumbered 10 to 1, they were soon dispatched. Ezra suffered a minor slice to his left shoulder, but other then that, the Royal family was safe and unharmed.
This attack forced the Royal family to abandon the remainder of their tour and return home. Once there, Amir Bram called for his reports on who sent the assassins, which his spy network had set to find shortly after the attack happened. All signs seemed to point towards the Kingdom of Polyduques, but Amir Bram felt that this was just a ploy. Sure enough, deeper into the reports was information pointing to Kingdom of Schlimmer, neighbor to both Polyduques. If the Empire of Melqior were to go to war with Polyduques, they would win, but it would devastate Polyduques and it's vassal neighbors, leaving Schlimmer able to lay hands on Polyduques mining mountains.
Of course, the Empire of Melqior could not allow itself to be used as such, or allow an attack on the Royal family to go un-punished. Amir Bram would personally lead the troops upon the Kingdom of Schlimmer. Amirah Zahara would keep court while her husband was on the war front. This proved to be a long, drawn out, and bloody war. Amir Bram had expected as much from any nation underhanded enough to hire assassins from the Murana gypsy tribes. Slowly, inch by inch, the Empire of Melqior won battles and gained ground.
Finally, almost three years after the start of this war, the Empire of Melqior was camped out in front of Schlimmer's capitol city, Lim. The Siege of Lim lasted for 100 days and 100 nights. Finally, the constant assault of fire being flung from above, the disease that was spreading through the city, and the famine that was killing even more rapidly then the disease was enough for the common people to revolt. Masses of them attacked the cities gates and walls, overpowering the guards and opening the gates to the Melqior forces. At the same time, others attacked the palace and killed the King and many of the nobles inside. Women and children were mostly rounded up and locked into tower rooms, however, some also died from the mobs of angry citizens.
Amir Bram was able to march into the palace and declare the Kingdom of Schlimmer no more. The crowds cheered when he announced this. Mostly because they knew that the Empire of Melqior would feed them and help them rebuild. The remaining nobles were either hung, banished, or brought back to the Empire to be watched. A few were allowed to stay and help their country rebuild, but these few hand children that were taken into the Empire as guarantee that they would remember the price of attack on Melqior. Finally, all was ordered enough that Amir Bram could hand over the remainder of the tasks to his generals and nobles. He would oversee the rest from his home.
Amirah Zahara was thrilled to see her husband return home, as were the six children. The Empire rejoiced. It was no surprise that Amirah Zahara was pregnant just weeks after the Amir's return. However, this pregnancy was harder then any previous pregnancy, including the first. All of her energy seemed to be going towards the child inside her. She was also gaining great amounts of weight. The physicians suspected that she was carrying two children.
Sure enough, seven months later she gave birth to twin girls. The first had pale white skin, blue eyes, and black hair. The second had a duskier skin, brown eyes, and golden hair. Both were given names meaning "light", because of the dawn just peeking into the windows as Zahara gave birth. Both girls were small and sickly, and the physicians couldn't say if they would live or not. The Amirah was weak also, but she was expected to pull through. The physicians warn that she should consider using an herbal tea every month to prevent further pregnancies. Her body, they say, is getting too old to successfully carry another child.
Round 6:
Before the twin's health was well out of the woods, the physicians found out that the Amirah Zahara was pregnant yet again. They argued vigorously that she needed to cleanse her body of this pregnancy. They told her that she was still too weak and the twins birth took too much from her body for her to be able to carry this baby and not risk her health and the health of the baby.
That she knew it was true irritated the Amirah even more then the constant arguments. However, Amirah Zahara had a dream that told her if she didn't birth a live child then the Empire of Melqior would be torn apart. She'd never had a prophetic dream before, but knew that it ran in the female blood of her family. Because it was considered quasi-evil magic (because the prophecies were as often about the bad that was too happen as about the good) she was hesitant to tell Amir Bram about it. However, when it came to the point where he was ready to order her to obey the physicians advice, she finally, and fearfully, told him.
It was with great relief that she heard her husband consent to allow her to carry the child. He didn't fear her for the prophesy, and realized that she had no control over what was dreamt any more than he did, regardless of the prophesy behind it. Amir Bram ordered the physicians to stop wasting everybody's time arguing about it and to start helping the Amirah do what was necessary to safely carry the child and live.
The physicians immediately put Amirah Zahara on bed rest. She held a court of sorts from her chambers. Her children were constantly around, even having some of their lessons within her chambers. Her ladies were always there also, and were always trying to do whatever they could to make sure that Amirah Zahara was not stressed in any way. All of the positive attention touched Zahara deeply. She did not realize just how deeply people had come to love and respect her.
Shortly after the Amirah Zahara entered her seventh month, a tragedy struck the Empire, and personally affected every member of the royal family and household. Amir Bram suffered a stoke as court was ending for the day. The fact that this happened in public was a rumor nightmare, as many people were told that the Amir was dead. However, he survived the stroke, his mind was as good as ever, but was paralyzed on his right side. The rumor's and the Amir's ill health forced the Amirah out of her bed rest so that she could help stabilize the Empire.
The physicians were frantic with worry, and rightly so. Shortly after the Amirah passes the eight month mark, she goes into an early labor. The labor was quick, less then an hour total. It was like her body was ready to rid itself of this burden. The child, a Princess, was born screaming like a banshee. Even with the strong screams, the child was weak. She had no eyes, no feet, and was half the size of a normal newborn. The physicians tried everything, but on the seventh day the little Princess passed quietly away as she slept. Amirah Zahara was greatly saddened, but also happy that her daughter was now at peace. This, and for the strife she was born to negate, was the reason they gave her the single name of Peace.
Amir Bram knew that his Empire needed a strong and able ruler, and decided to abdicate in favor of his son, Ezra. Bram and Zahara would continue to act as Regents for the young Amir Ezra until he came of age, but this would give the Empire some of the stability it desperately needed. Plus it would give Ezra something that Bram never had, an opportunity to learn how to rule.
Of course, the new Amir was expected to wed. The fact that he was just 12 was a moot point. Bram knew this and explained to his son that it would be a marriage in name only until he was able to rule without a regent. When Ezra asked when that would be Bram had to laugh at the equal parts fear and anticipation in his son's eyes - he would do well. Bram explained that the Empire's rules would allow anyone to take the crown after they were at least 15 years-old. However, he added, if there was time, an older age was usually sought - so that the new Amir or Amirah would be ready, strong and able.
Much debate was put into the search during court. However, the real decision was made in Amir Ezra's royal study with Bram and Zahara pointing out advantages and disadvantages. In the end, Amir Ezra chose to solidify relations with the island nation of Marinus. This was made partly because of the fact that it was a good decision, but mostly because of the fact that the only unwed noble girl close to his age was the supreme beauty Amalia the Baronesse of Roos-Linna. This fact amused Bram very much. Zahara, on the other hand, was just grateful that Amalia was also very kind and very smart - both would be needed, as she knew.
With this done, the Empire quieted down. Bram saw the royal engagement made, but the wedding would wait until the harvest. Unfortunately, there was to be a Royal funeral before that point. Bram, former Amir of Melqior passed away from a second stroke in his sleep. Everybody morned, but none more then Zahara. She even refused to wear anything other then the mourning colors of of pale pink for the first year, even to the marriage of her son and new Amir.
Round 7:
As the years passed, more and more of the daily running of the Empire fell to the destined Amir Ezra and the Regent Dowager Amirah Zahara started stepping back more and more. Finally, on Amir Ezra's 18 birthday the Empire celebrated his official reign starting. Part of the ceremony included Amalia's title changing from "consort" to "Amirah". It was at this time that Amir Ezra and the Amirah Amalia were finally able to consummate their marriage. The Empire is thrilled, as they've seen the young Amir grow into a good, strong, and just leader. Plus they've watched as the young couple found a true and deep love, something often uncommon in Noble families.
The Dowager Zahara is no longer regent, and is able to pursue her own choices much more freely. One of her choices is to marry a former servant of the castle called Ike. Ike used to be a chef in the castle, but gave up his position when he married the Dowager. Zahara met Ike when she was supervising the food for a party. Ike had just started at the castle shortly after Amir Bram passed away. He had a soft manner, but a quick wit and shot off many quips. He made Zahara laugh, and treated her as a person and not some porcelain figure to be set upon a shelf and sheltered.
Zahara loved how he made her laugh. The two started to spend time together. Pretty soon, Zahara knew that she was in love with this strong, sensitive man. However, she was unsure if Ike shared the feelings. Ike was very aware that she was a Noble and the Dowager Amirah, and this made him unsure of whether he should show his hand or not. The matter was solved one day when Zahara fell from a step. Ike was right there to scoop her up, and Zahara took the opportunity to give him a kiss. Ike was surprised, but took advantage of the opportunity and returned the kiss.
Shortly after the Dowager marries Ike, Amirah Amalia was able to announce to the Empire that she was pregnant. It seems that the petite beauty was able to hide her pregnancy from everybody until she was six months along, something that was custom in her land (to make it more likely that the child would survive the pregnancy). Just a few months later and the Empire was celebrating the birth of a new heir, the Crowned Prince Stef. Amirah Amalia named him after a former King in her country who had first made friends with the Amir of Melqior - This was a name that every noble of Marinus had in their family tree, in some form or another. The history of the name made the Empire rejoice even more, because it was expected that it would help tie relations to the small but wealthy island kingdome.
Nobody was happier about the birth then Princess Wren. With an heir to the throne, she finally felt free to pursue her life in the manner she wanted. She had decided that she would join the Nomadic Sisters, a religious order for women. As a Nomadic Sister, she would not be allowed to rule or even keep her title, she would never be allowed to marry, and if she ever bore children they would be passed on to others in such a way that no one would know who was the mother or where the child went. The Nomadic Sisters taught woman how to fight with hands and feet, and how to heal. They traveled alone mostly, and helped as they could. But first, she would spend at least the next 5 years in a temple learning. Wren's family was not especially happy about this, but did not make a fuss. It was, after all, her life.
Prince Zayn has decided that he would like to wander also. However, he is more practical and doesn't want to give up his title or fortune. He has decided that the Navy is for him, and has been reading everything he can about ships and foreign lands and customs and trade. When not in study, Prince Zayn has been on the docks watching the ships and helping when he can talk a captain into in. He has even made a few minor voyages to the next port. He has been promised that he will be given a position in the Navy once he is "of age".
This leaves Princess Belle, who has decided to become the biggest flirt the Empire has ever seen. She has a lot of her mother in her and is as rebellious a child as Zahara has ever seen. It doesn't seem to matter what punishments she receives or how her allowance is taken, she still insists upon trying her ways with the young men who hover around the court. Zahara fears that she will end up pregnant before she's 20!
The other four Princess' are still young enough to be happy to be children, and have not caused any issues to arise in the Empire. We will just have to wait and see what happens in the next few years.
Round 8:
Shortly before Prince Stef's first birthday, Prince Zayn disappeared. He left a note for his mother, Zahara, but didn't tell where he was going. The Royal family was upset with worry. Almost four months later a message arrived by carrier bird. The Prince was safe! It turns out that he had stolen aboard a trading vessel and wasn't discovered until they were 10 days out. He eloquently pleaded to be allowed to work on the vessel, which was allowed as the alternative was to toss him overboard and they were hesitant to do that to someone who appeared to be from a wealthy family. It wasn't until almost 2 months out to sea that Prince Zayn slipped up and they discovered his real identity. After much concern and debate, it was decided that a message would be sent back, but they could not turn around at that point. Prince Zayn was finally off on his adventure to exotic lands.
Other then this, it was a quiet time for the Empire. Sister Wren was in seclusion and working to become a full Nomadic Sister. Zahara received occasional reports from a friend, but for the most part nothing was heard about Wren. She was happy, and that made her family happy. One political faction did try to raise a bit of a scandal over the fact that the former Princess was now a part of an organization that was derogatorily called the "Nomadic Strumpets". However, the Empire in general was outraged over this and soon anybody who even mentioned the rumor was being shunned.
Shortly after Prince Stef's second birthday, Amirah Amalia became pregnant once again. The Empire had expected this, and the news was greeted with cheer. The Empire was building a strong Royal family and this was good for the stability of the Empire as a whole.
The only downside during this time was Princess Belle's continued wild ways. She was constantly being found in seclusion with some boy. Once she was even found with a man old enough to be her father's older brother! Luckily, she has been able to keep her "virtue" if not her reputation. Zahara and Amirah Amalia work hard to make sure that she has constant supervision, much to Princess Belle's dislike. Also, much to Princess Belle's dislike, only her connection to the Royal family has stopped her from running off with one of her "suitors" (as she likes to think of them). Amirah Amalia and Zahara can not wait until she can be married off!
After an full and uncomplicated pregnancy, Amirah Amalia gave birth to another son! Early the next morning a ship arrived in port and a small group got off and headed straight for the palace. Just as the sun was cresting the hills, Prince Zayn arrived home. Zahara was thrilled to see her son after two long years. She, and the rest of the Royal family was a little surprised to see that he came home with a wife and child!
Zayn had married a women met at the furthest port the ship traded with. She was an exotic beauty with black hair and eyes and a dusky rose colored skin. It turns out that the land was very matriarchal, and that women ruled everything from asking for a man's hand in marriage to if a man would work. Zayn met Nefi when she was working as a guide to the ship cargo master. The fact that the ship was completely crewed with men was almost a disaster for trading! However, Zayn continued to find reasons to have Nefi guide him around the city, and the two quickly fell in love.
When Nefi heard that Zayn was leaving she quickly decided to ask for his hand in marriage. This shocked and embarrassed Zayn a little, but one of the things he found he loved about Nefi was her strong will and sense of self. He agreed, but explained that at home he was a Prince with obligations that he couldn't and wouldn't put aside. It was quickly worked out that Nefi and Zayn would abide by the matriarchal laws within the privacy of their own home and whenever they traveled back to Seth, and that Zayn would adopt Nefi's matronymic (surname). When in other lands they would act as equals. This has been an interesting experience for Zayn who has discovered that the privacy of their one home means wherever they are currently staying and can be away from prying eyes.
On the way home, Nefi finally told Zayn that she was pregnant. She gave birth to her son at sea, a month before they reached their home port. The boy was named Seti, after the city Nefi and Zayn met in. Nefi chose to use Zayn's father's middle name of Qismat because the meaning was very similar to a belief of her people. His final name was after her grandfather, a man she admired and missed greatly.
Amirah Amalia and Nefi got along well together from the beginning. It helped that both were from a foreign land and both had son's within a month of each other. The Empire had it's wandering son home, and there was new blood in the Royal family. Everything was good...
