Georgiana and Frederick are second cousins both from the empirical estate of Manassas in the Empire of Yarrow. Manassas is the oldest state within the empire. Georgiana was born into her title being the only legitimate child of the former Marquess. Frederick inherited his dukedom a year earlier after the death of his mother. The engagement was arranged by the Empress herself so as to make stronger political ties with the oldest state. “Many generations have passed since a union between our respected Manassas and the House of Cerise. We must keep our empirical ties strong,” she had counseled to her youngest siblings, Colm and Grey. Meanwhile, Countess Almena finally married Sir Bartholomew upon the advisement of the Grand Duchess Annag. She and Annag had become exceptionally close upon Annag’s arrival. “I’ve lost one sister but have gained another,” she confided to Annag. Almena found out shortly after her marriage that she was pregnant and to her and Annag’s surprise, Annag was with child as well. Almena faired with pregnancy like her biological mother and aunt. She was ill the entire time and weak. Labor almost killed her. They both gave birth to daughters and swore to each other that the two girls would grow up as sisters. “Knowing of my own mother’s death at the hand of my birth and hearing of Faustina’s own troubles, I fear that Elisabeth will be my only child,” Almena confided to Emil. Emil told Annag Almena’s fears and asked his wife to talk to the girl. “She’s being silly,” he told his wife. “She’ll give birth to more children just as my mother had and forget all about this silliness.” Annag felt differently. She was an only child in her homeland and never dreamed of becoming so close to another woman other than her own mother. She found comfort and peace with sweet Almena and developed a closeness that she believed was stronger than that of Almena and her deceased sister. After fighting with Emil about Annag’s allegiance to Almena’s decision, he gave up but secretly hoping that Annag would bear him another heir.
Odd mews reached Empress Adela that the outskirts of the Empire were falling ill and people were dying in the hundreds daily. After receiving hundreds of messages pleading for help, Adela sought counsel with Dowager Faustina. After reading the letters and hearing first hand accounts of this disease, Faustina concluded that it was the same scourge that fell upon the empire thirty-five years prior, the scourge that prompted Adela’s father, the then King Hugo, to ascend the empirical crown. The Fits have returned.
