From the Royal House of Newbourne
In the Kingdom of Dunlin
Three new princesses join the Royal Houses of Dunlin! Unfortunately, what should be a happy day has been tainted with sorrow over the death of Empress Helen II of Kin, better known as Princess Helen to the Dunlish. She was killed only a few short months after the births of Prince Oscar and Prince Christopher of Thornhall. The Royal Family insists that she was held up by robbers on a trip to some unknown location; however, everyone knows that Princess Helen, arguably the most powerful of all her siblings because she was also an Empress, was eloping with a commoner – a butcher’s son, to be exact. When it was discovered that Princess Helen was missing, a search party was sent out. They were both found hours later, robbed and shot, with rings around their fingers; it is rumored that they were in each other’s arms.
When the search party returned, Princess Madeline was named Empress Regnant Magdalena I of Kin. This caused some worry amongst the Royal Family and the Royal Advisors, for Princess Madeline is the last of her line. If she does not produce issue, it could lead to civil war in Kin. It was therefore suggested that Princess Madeline immediately name King Frederick as her successor, which she did. Of course, the then-fifteen-year-old Empress-Princess was in quite a state of shock; many of the Kin nobles argue that she would have agreed to anything and that it is quite convenient that this tragedy has benefitted the House of Newbourne.
The clamoring from Kin grew so great that many were fearful of yet another war between Dunlin and Kin. King Frederick found it necessary to create a political alliance between Dunlin and the northern country of Fwodin. To do this, King Edvard III of Fwodin insisted that a bride be found for his eldest son amongst King Frederick’s sisters. Thus, the responsibility fell to Princess Lucy. It is said that King Frederick apologized to his sister for not allowing her “a chance to choose for herself,” but Princess Lucy knew that this was her duty to her family and her country. Prince Edward and Princess Lucy were married shortly after the princess turned sixteen-years-old. In the regular correspondence between Dunlin and Fwodin, it is said that the young couple get along quite well – although it is also said that they act more like brother and sister than husband and wife, which may explain why they have produced no children in the two years they have been married.
When Princess Madeline had turned seventeen-years-old, Lord Christopher begged an audience with both of his reigning children. He told the Empress-Princess and King Frederick that he thought Princess Madeline should begin looking for a husband. He suggested that she choose someone from Dunlin, in order to keep ties with Dunlin once she was of age and, officially, running Kin. Immediately, Princess Madeline suggested her childhood friend and sweetheart: Arthur, Duke of Parony. The match was approved without delay by King Frederick. That very afternoon, Princess Madeline asked the Duke for his hand in marriage (she had to ask him because she is a reigning monarch), and he agreed. She requested that they have a long engagement, and he agreed to that, too. The young Duke understood what it was like to lose a sibling, as his brother had died when Arthur was only a teenager. A year later, they are still engaged, but planning to marry soon, as Princess Madeline has come of age and will be moving to Kin, in order to rule properly.
