From the Royal House of Newbourne
In the Kingdom of DunlinFrom the private diaries of Prince Christopher Newbourne of Dunlin, Duke of Thornhall – husband of Queen Catherine I, father of King Frederick VI, and former Prince RegentI am now, officially, a proud grandpapa! Frederick Octavius Louis Baptiste, Marquis of Newbourne, Crown Prince of Dunlin, was born just this morning. He is a healthy eight pounds and there is certainly nothing wrong with his lungs. He will be called Louis by his family, to distinguish him from Freddy.Everyone in the family (except for Lucy, Maggie, Bea, and Lottie – we thought it best to let the girls all sleep) was notified as soon as Adéle went into labor. We had all gathered in one of the antechambers outside the Royal Bedroom – the bedroom Catherine and I had shared before she died. Freddy, Theo, and I all paced the length of the room several times. I was reminded, of course, of the births of most of my children, where I had occupied myself with the same activity. I was also reminded of the last time I had been here – mourning the loss of our daughter, Mercy – which, of course, reminded me of the loss of my wife.At this point, I glanced at Bessie, my second wife. I smiled as I thought of how surprised my living children were when I told them I was marrying again. And, really, that was why I married the woman in the first place – she’d made me smile again. I’d smiled rarely after Catherine had died; laughed, never. Ruling the kingdom without her and teaching Freddy all that I knew had made me weary. Until a Mrs. Elizabeth Frost came to court, visiting one of her younger sons, who was training to be a knight. Freddy and Kit wanted to know if I had taken this woman as my mistress before their mother died. I reminded them that, even if I hadn’t cared deeply for their mother, it would have been treason to be unfaithful to my Queen. And no, Bessie hadn’t had any title, but she had come from a respectable family, so there could be no objections. This seemed to appease them both.At some point during the long hours last night, after a particularly blood-curdling scream of pain from the other room, Kit announced that she wanted to join a nunnery. When asked why, she replied, “I’m not going through that,” and pointed at the door leading to the Royal Bedroom, just as Adéle let out another scream. I didn’t take her seriously until this afternoon, when she echoed what she’d said earlier to the Royal Advisors. Every Advisor was in outrage. The Princess Royal couldn’t not marry! She was too sought-after, her position in the Royal Family too much of a prize! At which point, my Kitten – stubborn and willful, as always – pointed out that she was not a “prize,” and, as Princess Royal, she outranked everyone in the room (including myself), except the King. I then tried to reason with her. I implored her to understand. “You have a duty to the Crown,” I reminded her. “You are Dunlin’s Princess Royal, which comes with certain responsibilities. And marrying in order to strengthen the kingdom is one of those responsibilities.” She argued (of course) that, with the birth of a new Crown Prince, it wouldn’t be long before the King and Queen had a new Princess Royal. Or that we could strip her of her title now, name Lucy Princess Royal, and have done with it. After this, Freddy stood. “Catherine,” he said, instantly informing Kit, Theo, Nell, and me that he was deadly serious (he never calls her Catherine; always Kit, Kitty, or Katherina). “As your brother and your sovereign, we can’t let you put aside, on a whim, all of your duties to our parents, your kingdom, and your king. Not now, in any case. If we are lucky enough to have a daughter, or – if not – when Princess Lucy comes of age, then we will release you from your title, and you will be free to live as you please. And that is the end of the matter.”After that scene, I took a stroll through one of the palace’s gardens. I needed some air, I suppose. As I strolled, however, I came upon Nell and one young Lord Highmoor, quite alone. I’d like to say that this was a rare surprise, but I’m afraid finding my eldest adopted daughter alone with young men of the court is an exceedingly common occurrence. It doesn’t matter which chaperone I set to watch Nell, she always manages to slip away from him or her. I fear she is getting quite a reputation. Whenever I try to set up a marriage contract between the little Empress and whichever young man she seems to be fancying at the time, I’m told how conservative I am, how backwards. I’ve tried telling her that her reputation will not help matters when she is officially ruling Kin, but my words fall on deaf ears.I cleared my throat loudly and Lord Highmoor, at least, looked a tad embarrassed. He left the garden, anyway, and I sent Nell to her bedroom. Afterwards, I headed down to the tiltyard to watch Theo and the other boys practice. Theo wants to add ‘Sir’ to his title, and I’ve seen no reason not to let him. He’s the top of his class in every subject. As I watched him with his friends, I was suddenly reminded that, with Louis’ birth, Theo is no longer Crown Prince. Therefore, he can roam the kingdom once he is a knight, searching for adventures. At the end of my day, I returned to the Royal Bedroom, hopeful to spend some time with my grandson. Everyone insists that Louis looks like his mother, but I see my Catherine’s eyes staring up at me; when Louis gave me a great gummy smile, Adéle remarked, “ ‘E ‘as your smile, Lord Christopher.”
