In May of 1912, Ruth gave birth to twins. However, the labor was hard and Ruth lost a lot of blood. She died a couple days later. Grief-stricken, Walter named the twins Lewis and Alberta, after Ruth.

Knowing the children needed a mother, he remarried a woman named Della in early 1914. Della was young and had the energy to keep up with five young children, and didn't seem to mind that Walter had so many children from his previous wife. The younger children warmed to her quickly, but Ada and Rose have still had a difficult time adjusting and are not always kind to Della. In August of 1915, Della gave birth to a child of her own, a son she named James after her father.

Between 1906 and 1910, Hollis and Rosalie welcomed four healthy boys, who they hope will all grow up to be strong men.

The Madigan family has lived a peaceful life so far. Elizabeth and Sam married when they were quite young and began having children right away. Rose came first, followed by Gwen, then the twins Thomas and Belle. Lily is the latest of their children, a bright and beautiful toddler now. They live in a small coastal town in Delaware, where Sam makes a good living as a doctor. Elizabeth also works, as a teacher, which many of her neighbors disapprove of; but Elizabeth has very progressive ideas, and as long as she is able to care for her children and teach at the same time she will continue to do so. The family has always been content, but recently frightening things have bene happening in the world. A war has started in Europe, one the family is hoping fervently the country can stay out of. Sam and Elizabeth watch the papers fervently, waiting for any sign that they may be joinign the war. They are particularly frightened that, with Sam's medical expertise, he may be drafted more quickly than others.
