[Opinions] Sigrid?
Replies
Wow. Its the name I chose for myself.
I love it, especially the nickname Siri. In fact, I've often thought of changing my name fully to it in some point. :-)

Its a beautiful name to me with a nice enough meaning, horrible to me are names like Ehrickah or M'Khai-Lah
It's personally nms, but I think it's fine to use in Scandinavia.
It is a classic Viking name
Sigrid means "victory" + "beauty" (or victorious and beautiful)
Irish names have been very popular for a long time; it is time for Scandinavian names now ;)
I like Sigrid but I prefer the short form Siri. Both R and G are harsh sounds so Sigrid may sound harsh, but I find it rather ethnocentric to call it "horrible".
"You sought a flower and found a fruit. You sought a spring and found a sea. You sought a woman and found a soul. You are disappointed."
"It does not become me to make myself smaller than I am." (Edith Södergran 1891-1923)

I don't care for Sigrid; it sounds harsh and gritty to my ears. Scandinavian names (in general) aren't really my style.
It's not my favorite name ever, but I do like it quite a bit. I think it's very pretty.
I like it. I thinkt it's quite beautiful. :-)

It's just an object. It doesn't mean what you think

Chrisell, on several occasions you have called names horrible. Or do you think it's only childish to call a name you like horrible? o_O

I don't recall ever using the word horrible, since it's overly dramatic, but perhaps I have. However, I've made negative comments in response to a request for opinions. I don't go around announcing that names are horrible and expecting everyone to agree with me.
Other people make far worse comments than mine every day on here. But I'm an easy mark, aren't I?

No, not really. In fact, I find you one of the hardest people to speak against on this forum, mainly because I have a lot of respect for you. I don't really a lot of comments on this board - yours is just one that I happened to see.
I suppose that, by putting her opinion in the original post, IrishGirl's convictions about the name seem a little more harsh. But I don't think they're childish.
(BTW, a forum search (yes, I was sad enough to do a forum search over this!) shows a few posts where you've said a name was horrible. This one in particular, over the name MacKenzie: http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=60977&board=baby - however, that was a long time ago)

Childish....
I have my own opinion about names and just because you like it it doesn't mean everyone has to. Please don't offend me again, Chrisell because this isn't the first time. I'm not trying to be rude I'm asking you politely. Please. I do think the name looks and sounds horrible and I was wondering about other peoples opinion. Isn't that what these boards are for? Or am I meant to pretend every name is beautiful. Or maybe my vocabulary isn't as broad as yours and I use "horrible" and "ugly" to describe things. Big deal. I'm 15, just accept it. Sorry if I sound rude, I'm not trying to be but believe it or not, I do get upset when you, or anyone else, say nasty things to me like "I'm childish" because I'm sure I'm one of the youngest regulars on this board and I sometimes feel like I'm being ganged up on just beacuse I'm younger than most of the others. Sorry for rambling but I just needed to get that out of my system because it's been there for a while. It's fine if you don't reply to this I just wanted to let you know.

Um, if you don't want me to ever disagree with you just because you're young, then you can hardly argue with my description of your wording as "childish". You can't have it both ways. Either you behave like a grown-up and expect to be treated as one, or you use your youth as an excuse and get treated as a child.
"Horrible" was rude to my ears. You don't have to like my opinion of your wording, but don't throw a hissy fit about it. This is, as you say, an opinions board, and I'm as entitled to my opinion of your wording as you are to your opinion of a name.
You are not the youngest by a long stretch - we have posters as young as 9 here - but you are one of the young ones who has caused difficulties in the past through behaving immaturely, and you got told off for it. If you want advice on how to behave in an adult context, go ask Faerielights, who is 12 years old and never gets told off.
"Please don't offend me again, Chrisell because this isn't the first time."
Or what? Don't go around threatening people when you've got no authority. I'm a moderator here, and because of your early behaviour I had to tell you off a few times. Big deal. Quit whinging! You only make yourself look more childish by complaining about it.
Honestly, what a fuss over one word . . .
PS - I didn't see you getting upset over Ylva calling you ethnocentric, by the way. That's a far worse accusation than "childish", since you admit that you are a child. So where's your tantrum about Ylva? Hmm?

I wasn't threatening you.Or I didnt mean to sound like I was either.
So I'm sorry. In all honesty, I don't think I sounded childish. And I wasn't "using my youth as an excuse". I'm just sensitive. And I'm sure fairielights is great and all but if I go looking for advice from anone it'd be from my close friends and people I actually know. "Quit whinging". Hypocrite. I say a name is horrible and you call me childish. Yes i was childish at the start and I'm embarrassed about that but I wish you wouldn't hold it against me. I'm trying to be polite like I usually am but you're making it very difficult. I suppose you'll never accept me here now since I seemed to have "offended" you twice. I'd like to stay on these boards but if you'd rather I left then I will because i don't want to stay here if I'm unwanted. It's your decision. And I don't care what other posters say about me. I don't know what "ethnocentric" means. You are one of the moderators so that's why I care about what you think.

Ok . . .
1) You didn't think you sounded childish, but I did. Since I am a decade older than you, this is no great surprise. No big deal.
2) I don't hold your early behaviour against you. But you seem to hold my position of authority against me. Think about that.
3) I'm not a hypocrite. I made one small comment, you threw a tantrum and brought up everything I'd ever done. You're whinging, I'm not, end of story.
4) I'm only a moderator when I put my "moderator hat" on, ie when I post as "Chrisell the Moderator". The rest of the time I'm just me. Everyone else seems to understand that.
5) I'm not going to pretend that every comment you make is justified just because you're sensitive and I'm sometimes a moderator. No way. Firstly, because it would be boring and hypocritical for me; and secondly because I'm not your mother and I don't have to shelter you from real life. And in real life, you can either be sensitive and spend all your time crying; or grow a thicker skin and deal with the odd disagreement.
Everyone gets negative comments from time to time. The fact that you've made such a palava about this one merely justifies the original comment. You have to learn not to take other peoples' opinions - and yourself - so seriously. Lighten up!

I think it's beautiful.
I know a little girl named Sigrid--because I live in a town with a high Norwegian population. It's not a favourite of mine, simply because I don't really like that Sigrid all that well (fun fact: she has brothers named Lars and Nils).
My favourite Norwegian names are Solveig (SOL-vay) and Ingrid, but there are quite a few others I like.

Actually her name was Haven before she changed it to Elizabeth, Sigrid is one of her posting names and she uses Siri as a nickname for it. : )

I love the name. It's one of my more distant cousins names. But I love Scandanavian/Icelandic names so, that could be why.
