For English speakers, yes, Dasha can stand just fine on its own. I don't know about its usage in Russia (assuming it's Russian?), but that wouldn't impact on your child's everyday life.
I think it's nice and different. Not a favourite for me, but I do love Sasha and Misha so I can see the attraction.
I pronounce it how it looks -> DASH-a. The first syllable like the word "dash".
