There is a very old French name Esprit, which is the name of a Catholic saint and refers to the Holy Spirit.
I would imagine that Spirit is the direct English translation of the French name. (Which is male).
I have also seen the feminine name Spirita used in medieval documents, often spelled Sprota or Sprotta. I'd imagine this may also be one of the origins of the name.
