I looooove Frederick. It's my favorite boys' name. Not a *huge* fan of Fred, but I really like Freddie. I've only ever met one Fred - I think he's in his late 20s/early 30s.
I prefer Frederick to Frederik just because the latter looks a little abrupt. I don't think it would cause too much confusion, though. I'm sure a Frederik would probably have to correct some people if he lived somewhere the spelling wasn't common, but overall I don't see it being a huge problem.
