I love Sylvie too, but I am more easily drawn to Eugenie because Eugenia is a family name for me.

Eugenie is a bit pretentious to me though it's a beautiful name. Sylvie seems more approachable. I'm goin' with Sylvie.

Personally, I think Eugenie is wonderful & I much prefer it.
This may be because I just can't shake the association I make between "Sylvia" and 45-year-old women.

I love the fact that names like Sylvia make me think of more mature women. Something like Sylvia has so much more oomph and power than perpetually-youthful names like "Madison" or "Destiny".

I'm a 45 year old woman. I turn 46 at the end of this month.
I can tell you that I've never been happier and more secure. You're going to love your 40's, all of you younger women. Don't let the advertizers brain-wash you into buying their anti-aging products. Truely.
I'm even looking forward to menapause. I gleefully tell my dh that when the estrogen starts to decline, no more nurturing Mrs. Nice-Guy. I get to be as selfish as a man. He rolls his eyes and groans. I can't wait.
It's all in how you look at it. :-D Send all those 45 year old Sylvias my way. We'll have a great ol' time.

Sorry if my post made it sound as though I was knocking people in the 40s. I'm less than 10 years away from that mark myself, so I'd better not knock it 'cause in the blink of an eye, that's what I'll be!
I guess what I meant to say is that when I was a child, this always seemed to be the names of people aunts, and never anyone my age. Thus I only have one mental image springs to mind whe I hear it. Eugenia/ie probably ought to have the same association for me, except I never meant any, and I think the word Eugene/ Eugenie/ Eugenia is so interesting.

When it comes to "old lady names" I have trained myself to like them all the more on new-borns because of the connection to old / middle aged people. Life renewing itself is beautiful and heart-warming. But it takes practice. I didn't always think this way.
I've always wondered why Sylvia didn't become more used, given the popularity of Olivia. Aren't they both the same style / vintage? Certainly the same sounds. Why some names take off and others don't is intriguing and fun, don't you think?
