[Opinions] Karen, Kara or Karina? (more)
Replies
Karen. I see it as Scandinavian rather than dated, and I enjoy its cool elegance.
Kara does nothing for me. If it doesn't mean 'black' it's a spelling error, and fits in with other silly little names like Emma. I pronounce it KAH-ra, with a long A; definitely not Karra.
Karina also looks like a mistake for Carina, which I slightly prefer though I wouldn't use either. The -a ending is needlessly fussy and frilly, and causes a long, whiney eee sound.
For the record, I've known a spoilt and annoying Karen as well as a splendid Danish aunt; a giggly little boy-mad Cara; and a pleasant, very bright Carina who lives on the edge. So associations aren't a factor.

Karina because Karen is too 50's dated and Kara is too 80's dated.
Agree
I love Carina and Cara, both with C's. I prefer Carina because it sounds a bit more feminine and frilly, which I tend to like in girl names. I'm not a fan of Karen.
Kara. I don't like the others. I pronounce is as car-uh.
Karina. It's just more attractive than the other two. I say Kara "KAIR-uh". I think Karen needs some more time before it's ready to come back. When I hear it I think of a strict, uptight soccer mom (probably because I knew one with that name). I never really heard of Kara being dated to the 80s, but I just don't like it.
I'd choose Karina, simply because I love girly names that have short spunky nickname possibilities (I have a friend named Karina who goes by Kat, but then there's Karrie or Rina or whatnot).
My pronunciation of Kara is hard to explain in writing (my middle name is Cara, so it peeves me when people don't pronounce it my way). It's not CARE-uh and not CAHR-uh. The A is the same is in apple. But most people would say KARE-uh.
I've never really seen Karen as dated. It still hasn't left the top 200. I have seen Kara as 80s either. I much prefer the C spelling though, but that might be partially due to bias. The only Cara/Kara s I have ever met have been born in the 90s or 2000s. And I don't see Karina as cutesy.
