I've always thought it was cute, but I've been liking it a lot more lately too. I don't think of it as an old lady name at all. To me it's very fresh and clear and bright. I think it could easily fit in with some of the popular names at the moment.
I think it's alright on its own, but I personally would use it as a nn for Margaret. But I might spell it Mae then... not sure.
I don't have any combos for May, and don't have the time to come up with some good ones right now. But I definitely want to try doing that soon! I don't think May Belle is that great as a double fn. Maybelle is a GP of mine, and I wouldn't mind seeing it in real life, but separating the names seems odd. It makes me think of when people name their daughter Emma Lee or something.
