[Opinions] Joaquin (Pronunciation?)
I'm trying to decide if I like Joaquin, but I can't figure out which is the correct pronunciation (I saw a commercial for Joaquin Phoenix's new film and it said "ZHAH-quin").
Which way do *you* pronounce it?Do you like it?-Seda*

Actually I think the original Spanish pronunciation is more like "hwah-KEEN", with more breath behind it than just "wah-KEEN".

wah-KEENI've heard this name pronounced a few different ways, but I like the pronounciation of (wah-KEEN) the best out of them. It's a nice name, one I've gotten used to lately.

I've always heard wah-KEEN (it's subtly different from WAH-keen to my ear). I've heard that for Joaquin Phoenix, and that's also the way Kelly Ripa pronounces her youngest son's name. Another way I've heard, maybe the Spanish way (?), is ho-ah-keen. I've heard Joaquin Phoenix's name pronounced a few other ways, too, though, but wah-KEEN was the most consistent way I've heard it. :b To emphasize that, a book I read YEARS ago about the Phoenix family (not sure how accurate...) had young Joaquin asking about his name; since all his siblings had "nature" names, until he was about 4-5 years old, he thought his name was "Walking". :b

Yes, they chose the last name Phoenix, when Joaquin (a.k.a. Leaf) was very young, I think. But before that, their last name was BOTTOM. And they actually named their child River Bottom before changing their ln?! LOL. That family has been fascinating to me for years. I was obsessed with River Phoenix by the age of 12 (so 17 years ago), and now I'm fascinated by Joaquin and his talent, and their sister Summer still acts quite a bit and she's talented as well. Rain(bow) doesn't do as much, but I did see her in something fairly recently. Liberty isn't in the business at all anymore, I don't think. Interesting names, too, I agree. :b

WAH-keen. I've always thought that Joaquin Phoenix pronounced his name this way. The Internet Movie Database and Wikipedia agree, so perhaps the you saw trailer was wrong. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001618/biohttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joaquin_Phoenix
