It is 1945. Last year, the family received a telegram that Ben Jr. and his family had been killed in an attack on the Philippenes. Eliza and Eli are the first of their generation to welcome grandchildren. Their eldest son, Thomas, got married three years ago and has two sons. Gracie June also got married this past year. Stephen and Betsy are doing well together, raising their children. Sarah and Aaron are also doing well raising their children. Both Jake and Isaiah are in the Army now, and Silas wants to join the air force. Jonny and Lydia don't have anything to report. Debbie and Caleb have adopted three more children. Abby and George haven't had any more children, but they are happy raising their daughters. Scottie and Rose had a daughter in 1942, just before Scottie was deployed to Italy. He was killed in the fighting when his daughter was a few months old. Rose is dating again and thinks that she will get married, if only for Molly's sake.
