It is 1935. The Newell family is surviving the Depression fairly well. Ben retired officially two years ago because the dairy farm can no longer support two families. Becky is busy helping less fortunate families in their community. Ben Jr. writes occasionally, but never says much. Apparently he lives in the Philippenes with his wife and son. Two and a half years ago, Ben and Becky recieved news that he had a daughter, Marcie. Eliza and Eli haven't had any more children. Eli's car sales business is suffering, but he makes enough to get by. Stephen hasn't remarried yet, but is content to raise his son and daughter. Sarah and Aaron have had two more sons. Jonny and Lydia have had two children together, Martha and Amy. Debbie and Caleb still haven't had more children, but they are thinking about adopting children in need. Abby got married four years ago. Her husband was in the stockbroking business before the crash, but has since found manual labor wherever people will hire him. They have a daughter, Lucy. Scottie did indeed enlist in the Army on his eighteenth birthday. He is in Pennsylvania at a base there training.
