I have a great aunt named Gwendolyn (she goes by Gwen)
and I do think the name is very nice, she's kind of a pretentious person, and my grandma didn't like her a whole lot.
I'm not sure of her middle name, actually. My grandmas name is similar, Valoryn (vah-lor-in, not val-lor-in) Ruth.
All in all, I like the name spelled Gwendolen better than Gwendolyn, and I think I'd prefer Gwen by itself better.
