The old Sanskrit root rap(Vedic)/lap(post-vedic) meant to talk, chatter, etc.; and jalp which may be related (an irregular frequentative?) means to murmur, prattle, etc. It was used in a religious context where people, both men and women, viewed themselves as the woman pining away for their lover (God). In this metaphor, the woman is supposed to be going insane from the separation, and murmuring and prattling and discussing with her friends the virtues of her lover.

Whether it is from that, I do not know, but jalpA is used in parts of India as a female name. Gujrati (like Hindi) is a descendant of the languages from which Sanskrit arose as the formal form.
