[Opinions] Shirley
What do you think of Shirley for a girl? Does it make you think of Shirley Temple? I think it might make a comeback. I mean people are still watching her movies and might think it's cute. It has risen a tiny bit in popularity also. Do you see it getting really common again?Do you still see it as dated? Does the Sh-beginning make it sound weak to you? Or insubstantial? (I sometimes have that with Sh-names, especially when they end in -ee, like Shirley and Shelby). Do you know anyone named Shirley? Any young ones? What would you pair it with?

It makes me think of Shirley Bassey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirley_Bassey) who is fabulous. So I don't think it's too bad - but it is a bit close to Shelley, which I don't like at all.

I loved Shirley Temple as a little kid. So the name will always be that to me. I don't thik I dislike it though. Could be nice on the right kid.

Shirley has always and will always be a very dated and old fashioned (and not in a good way) name. I also think of it as a male name, as there was a male television personality as i was growing up named this. Also, for some reason I associate this name with a screeching sound, I'm not sure why, I wish I could explain it! I don't think it will ever be really popular - its far too old fashioned for most people to even consider, especially given the trend for tryndified names at present. Unless of course Sherlee became popular :P

It seems dated to me - the only Shirleys I have known are in their 30s. I knew them in school and it awfully dated then.It reminds me of the word shrill too which doesn't help. I have a Sh-name - I don't see the insubstantial thing. In the Anne of Green Gables books she calls one of her sons Shirley - oddly enough I quite liked it on a boy.

Shirley is my mom's name and she was named after her aunt. My mom never cared for her name partially because it was dated for her generation. I think it is still dated and I'm not all that fond of even though it is my mom's and great aunt's name. I don't think it sounds weak or insubstantial.

I know some women named Shirley, but they arn't young. It's a pretty name, still a bit dated, though. It may come back, but never be really common. Still, what do I know! I wouldn't have picked Ava for being as popular as it's become.

I don't like Shirley. It's dated, but I can't think what generation it belongs to. It's probably a few years from a comeback.
