[Opinions] Re: Scottish baby girl's name - Caoimhe ...ideas/opinions please
in reply to a message by Gavin
I adore the name Caoimhe. We used it for my dog, because of it's lovely meaning- her full name is Caoimhe Tigerlily, but we just call her Lily. I love the sound, the meaning, and the look. It's a gorgeous name.
Yes, there will be spelling and pronounciation issues, but people will get used to it. There's a Saoirse in Ella's class and she manages just fine. She also has a Caoimhe, a Niamh and an Aoife at
her school. This is in Australia. People can mess up just about any name so I don't think thats a good enough reason to avoid it. I grew up always having to spell and pronounce my name for people, and I survived just fine :)
It's a great name. I say go for it.

Thank you for your responses. I was particularly interested in the thoughts of an aussie. I am Scottish but my wife is Australian. Although we live in Edinburgh at the moment I think it is likely we will emigrate to Australia at some point... A;though we love them, we are hesitant about certain names like Caiomhe(f), Ailsa (f), Struan (m) Lochlann(m) and Cuillin (m)for that reason. Jen (my wife) is scared the names would be a burden and would be mis-spelt and mis-pronounced there!
FWIW, I know loads of Lachlan's (one of the top boys names here) and thats not exactly the most straight forward spelling. I also know plenty of Sean's and a few Niamh's. If people can get used to those 3, they can get used to Caoimhe. Everyone got used to Saoirse pretty quick smart. I don't personally know the Caoimhe, Niamh and Aoife at Ella's school, but I'm sure they manage fine considering Saoirse does.
Edinburgh is a lovel city. I have relatives near there- in Crief and just outside of Crief. Beautiful country.
