[Facts] Mary Polly?
I'm researching branches of my family tree. In addition to discovering a great (x5) gf named Abijah, I've come across several Mary Pollys. Now, I'm sure these folks were well aware that Polly is a pet form of Mary but I was curious why the names were listed this way. I wonder if the person who took the particular census wrote the name Mary followed by the nn Polly and it was recorded as 'Mary Polly.' Or maybe I'm completely wrong and people actually named their dds Mary Polly.
Question: Has anyone ever come across or heard of someone named Mary Polly?
TIA

I've never heard of a Mary Polly, no. I think that your first explanation is quite plausible - They would have wrote down Mary and then the nickname following it, and as a result the names together look to you and I like a redunadant combo.
Most people then would have been well aware of the origins of Polly, I imagine, as it wasn't too uncommon.
