[Opinions] Gemma
I like most sparkly things, so I often find myself trying to find names that match my style that are associated with glitter and such. Only a few gem names meet my criteria of not sounding overly new-agey or flaky (Pearl, Ruby, Opal, Garnet). I came across the name Gemma, meaning "gem", of course, and wondered if it could make my list. What do you think of the name Gemma? I myself am still not sure about it. It is an old name (Dante's wife was a Gemma) but I'm still waffling about it.

Always loved the name Gemma and I think it would fit the idea that you want.

Gemma is one of my favorite girl names. I love the meaning, and it sounds strong, classic, and feminine. It doesn't have the same frilly feel as Ruby or Opal. It's not very popular where I live (the U.S.), though it barely made the charts for 2008. I think that it could qualify for your list.

I actually quite like it. It's not really my style though so i'd never use it, but I think its nice - not too common but not 'out there' at all

I like it; it has a classic feel with a dash of modernism because it is very close to the word "gem".

Gemma is one of those names I didn't like until I had some sort of real association with it. My mom's teaching assistant has a sister named Gemma and even though I haven't met her, it helped me to like the name better.

I don't think of it as sparkly or even gem-related really. I think of it as implying abundance or fertility, because of the Latin gemma being a bud (metaphorical jewel). In botany there are a number of terms referring to budding that use the root gemma, and I think the Italian verb gemmare is to bud. I guess that's idiosyncratic of me, but I just don't see it in the same 'shinies' category like Ruby or Pearl at all. It's one of my favorite names.

It's ok, but it was extremely popular in the 1980s where I live, so it seems a bit dated to me.

It's okay, but I would never use it. I think it could definitely make the list, though.

Gemma doesn't have that same feel to me as Pearl, Opal, Ruby, and the like. It is definitely more understanded and has a warmth to it. It has a pretty sound, I love it. It's completely unusable for me, my son's initials are GEM. Maybe a granddaughter some day...

Gemma is really beautiful and elegant. It makes me think of supermodels.
