[Opinions] Haven't been on this soapbox in a while...

Why do people insist that twins have cutesy matched twinsy names? Just name them like you would any other two children you would have. Yes, they shared a womb. People will be reminding them that and annoying them with questions like "Do you have a secret language? Do you feel each other's pain?"
They are two separate individuals with two separate personalities and identities. The entire concept of paired names indicates that one thinks of twins as a joined entity, a paired set. Twins are not socks; they are not salt and pepper shakers. One is fine without the other, and giving them cutesy paired names takes away from that.
+ Yes, I am a twin. Yes, we have "paired" names. Yes, we hate it.

When there are BAs with twinsets like Hannah and Anna or Peyton and Payton I always wonder if the parents realized they're two separate beings or do they think they're photocopies? I find it odd that people would do this at a time when, esp. with identicals, you're adivced to try to make twins as individual as possible, not dressing them alike, placing them in different classes.
This said, I must confess I like the idea of "secret themes" for twins, such as names that look and sound totally different but have similar meanings (eg. I like Malka and Regina as a twinset). So it's not obviously matchy and no one would really notice it unless they 're into name etymology, and the kids themselves wouldn't really notice until they start wondering about the meanings of their names.

I like secret themes across any sibset! If you're going to do themes anyway, that's the way to go.
Can't shout AMEN loud enough!
This.
Why don't people just say 'What are your two favourite girls names?' or 'What names would you give to sisters / two daughters'?
Like, my favourite names are Agatha and Beatrice and that's what I'd name daughters one and two but if I had twins I would totally name them Guinevere Jane and Genevieve Jean! Or Norah and Rohan, get it, because they're acronymns!!?!

Seriously. I've never thought about what I'd name twins particularly. I'd just have to come up with two names I like, and that'd be the easy part!
My sister and I aren't twins, but we did get cutesy matching K names.

I am a twin too...
And I completely agree. We have the same middle name but we don't have matching first names so generally we don't have any problems name wise. There really is no need to pair them up more than needed, the dumb questions are enough "Do you guys dress alike?! Or like the same guys?!" I have seen twins though with exactly the same names and I felt so sorry for them. That is basically like saying you're the same person.

Eh not really, I've never used my middle name...
and neither have my parents. Ever. I think it's just there so I'd have a middle initial to be honest. And no one else knows it so it never bothered us at all really. I'd rather have the same middle name than be "Rose and Lily" "Mae and Rae" "Madelyn and Madison," I know sisters that have the same middle name and they aren't twins so I never really thought it was that odd.

Jen. We're identical.
More often than not we were just a "Je..." sound that trailed off because they weren't sure which ending to add. But it wasn't too bad because I'm quite a bit taller than she is.

Agree
I don't get why people think it's cute to give twins matchy names either. I don't like it one bit, although I'm not a twin. You have more say in the issue. :)

Thank you.
