Alessa has grown on me but I wonder if it's too close to Alexa and Alyssa. When you pronounce it do you strongly hear the difference or would you often mistake an Alessa for an Alyssa?

I love it and think it's prettier than any of the other Alex- names! I have Alessa Maddalena as a combo. I don't quite pronounce it like either of your two choices, it's more like uh-LESS-ah and uh-lace-ah. I don't think it's trendy at all, it's classy and feminine. I don't think Alessia is quite as pretty.

No, I don't know anyone who goes by this name. It DOES seem trendy to me, though; the sound is reminiscent of the -issa/-yssa/-essa trend that was popular when I was growing up. I don't like the way the "less" sound seems to thud in the middle of the name.
I like Alessia a bit more, but not by much. I pro. it ah-LESS-sia.
