(27) King: Mordecai Chester Homeros Caspar "The Defender"
(19) Queen: Salacia Mirabel Vianne
(2) Princess: Bellona Viviana Morgaine
(nb) Crown Prince: Solon Morpheus Brynmor Emory Morcant
The Royal House of Tyrian
In the Kingdom of Terra Pagoda
Written from Mordecai's perspective
I still cannot believe it. Only two weeks ago I was the fourth son of a King and tomorrow they will crown me King. I cannot rule our Kingdom! It was never supposed to be me! The war ruined everything. It has ruined our lands, it has taken my brothers and my father. After Morc and Em had perished in battle, I kept thinking "at least Bryn is still alive to serve as Crown Prince". But then the news came. I can still feel the wax seal breaking between my fingers. The message contained seven words: "Brynmor dead, King mortally wounded, battle lost".
I conferred with my Father's advisors. For the first time as far as I can recall, they agreed: I should marry my eldest brother's fiancée in his stead, I should get her with child as soon as possible, I should be crowned the day after the burial of my father and brothers, and General Andor would command the army during this war.
I saw the sense in their advice and agreed. I would need to get an heir, since there was no one besides me who could make a claim on the throne. I would marry Salacia, since we needed the alliance with her House. I would be crowned King, even though I don't think I'm up for this responsibility. And Andor was truly the only hope Terra Pagoda had left now in this war, now that my Father and brothers were gone.
The coronation ceremony was kept sober, and so was the wedding that took place the week after. Most Lords were too busy fighting in the war to attend, so the guests consisted mostly of their noble Ladies and the very old and very young Lords. I was glad when it was over. Salacia looked beautiful, but it kept going through my mind that she should have been Bryn's wife, not mine. At night, when we found ourselves alone in what was now our bedroom, we did the duty we had to for the sake of the Kingdom.
About a year later she had given birth to our daughter. I am very happy to be a father, but I confess I'm a little disappointed she's a girl. We're a year after my father's death and there is still no heir to succeed me. I can tell Sally is a lot happier being a mom than being a Queen. She is a good mother I think and even as a Queen she is
doing about the best as can be expected from a woman her age. Sometimes I think she's still half a girl. She can be so sweet and naive. I have come to like that.
The Kingdom has entered a more quiet period. General Andor has managed to drive our enemies off. He assured me they'll be back though, but due to severe losses on their side it will likely take them some time to recover. He insisted he'd teach me strategies in war and to perfect my weapons training for when they'll be back. As much as I dread going to battle, I realize I have to do this.
*a year later*
Sally just told me the news right before I go off to battle: She's expecting another child. I am very happy she is and I'm hoping it will be a boy this time.
The battles are draining me. Not only the fighting itself is harder than I ever could have imagined, but after that I have to discuss tactics with the Generals, show my face to the soldiers and receive Lords who have issues they want to discuss with me. Losses on both sides have been plentiful. The invaders cannot press further onto our lands, but I don't have the strength to push them back completely either. But I have and idea, which I will run by the Generals tonight.
The enemies have finally fled. The plan worked! We took some small groups of our most experienced soldiers and destroyed their food reserve and poisoned the wells they use. Two days after that we attacked with our full strength and they didn't stand a chance against us. I am glad the war is done. For now.
Upon my return I found Sally in labor. Four hours after I got back I was holding my heir in arms. I chose to name him Solon, which means "wisdom", to remind our people that when strength alone does not suffice, wisdom can still bring victory. His full name is Solon Morpheus Brynmor Emory Morcant. Morpheus after my Father, Brynmor, Emory and Morcant after my brothers. Outside the common people are praising their King "The Defender". I should go show them their new Crown Prince.
