I prefer Jacob. It's slightly more interesting than John. I dislike Jacob but I like the nickname Jake.

For sure John is better. (And only spelled John, I do not like Jon or Jonathon.) I would never even consider Jacob. My dad is John and my son is John. We call him Johnny, John John, etc. We do not call him Jack, but that is cute. John has NEVER had any other Johns in his classes although he is only 4 (socer, music, gym, preschool, etc.). He always has Jakes of Jacobs. I just don't like the sound, not very refined in my opinion. John is timeless and at this point, not overused like Nicholas, Aidan, Jake, Matthew, Ryan and Zack.

John because it's a family name on both sides of my family so I definitely plan on using it someday. I like how Jacob looks and sounds in my head, but not so much how it sounds spoken, and the nickname Jake is nmsaa, though Jay is nice.

After some thought...I prefer John. It is close, because John is boring. But overall, I just don't like the sound of Jacob, and I strongly shy away from the nickname Jake. I also tend to stay away from bible names, but in the bible I think John has a better track record than Jacob.

I love both names, but I think I'd probably go with Jacob. I just think it's a lovely name and manly too.

Ack, I greatly dislike both because of OVERUSE. But if I had to choose, I much prefer the sound of John and Jack is a great nn option. I've never understood the attraction to the sound of the name Jacob, and ever 3rd little boy I meet where I live is named JACOB! (...But I'm not bitter. lol)

I know John was over used in the first half of the 20th century, but Jacob has taken over and it extremely tired, to me.

I love John because, like Mary, it (ironically) seems to be an overlooked gem. It has always struck me as a gentle, but strong name. A "still-waters-run-deep" kind of name.

Jacob, John is too normal and overused. Plus Jacob is my brothers name.

I favour the name Jacob over John. I also like the nickname Jake.

They're both horribly overused - John more consistently, but Jacob more recently. Sound-wise, I'd go with Jacob.

I find John very "plain" and not very interesting. I prefer Jacob, because I like the sound better and I like the nn Jake.

Jacob, probably because John has a risk of being shortened to Jack, which I cannot stand. However, I love both Jacob and Jake, so Jacob gets my vote.

I love John! It's classic and strong and ages well. I can imagine a John at any age. Plus, it hasn't been as popular for the past few years. Jacob is nice too, but it's just too popular to use right now.

Depends. Does he have a nn? My husband is John and I love it! There are less John's right now (as babies) than Jacob's. Plus, John can have the nn Jack. Either way John and Jack are super cute!

Hmm...I'm not really a fan of either of these. Neither one is on my list. John is so plain and Jacob is so popular! I think between the two I'd have to pick John because it's a family name and Jack can be a nn for it which I love! :)

I personally prefer John. I have never liked the -cob part of Jacob. Also, I dislike the fact that Jacob has become so popular lately. There are a lot of Johns around campus here in Georgia, but I still think it's a fine name, even if it is a little overused. Definitely John for a baby being named nowadays.

I much prefer Jacob to John. Why? I guess it's b/c growing up, I knew a lot of Johns and maybe one Jacob. Plus, I love the nn Jake, but not the nn Jack. Go figure, eh? :o)
