By Indian I mean names used in India. I know that there are heaps of them on this site but I would like to find out which ones are actually used in India. I'm writing a story, so that's what I need them for. So far I have Shanti and Lalita which I really like but not exactly sure how they're pronounced and wondering if they are actually used in the country. I haven't really decided which area are the story will take place in so for now you can just suggest any Indian name.

Yeah, would be a great help if you knew children/people from India and if you have any idea what's commonly used there at the moment. I'm looking for more regular Indian names, they don't have to be exotic.

Names of girls I know born in India or from Indian families:
Sonal, Lakshmi, Parveen, Priya, Padmini, Bharti, Deepa.

The thing with India is that people in different regions are likely to have different types of names, based on religious affiliations, regional history, and regional culture.

That said, some of the more trendy/popular girl names in India include:
Arpita
Ekta
Kanyakumari
Kavita - which I have seen in use
Laxmi
Mandakranta
Mrignayani
Parvati
Priyamvada
Seema

I rather like Kanyakumari, myself.

Have you seen Lakshmi in use? Or Asha, Lalita and Shanti?

Kanyakumari is nice but a bit long. Are nicknames used in India? If so is there one for Kanyakumari?

I also like Parvati and Arpita.

I actually do know an Asha. I'm not exactly an authority, but any means, but Lakshmi is definitely used.

Aruna. That's my cousin's name...her dad's from India. Aruna is Sanskrit for "Dawn."
Also, I have two classmates named Gauri and Sugandha.
