Sarah died in childbirth in 1923, a move no one was expecting after 14 successful labors. It was too much for Wheeler, who decided he had to redistribute some of his children. Mabey and Fern went to live with Birdie when she left, and Filomena was sent to live with Hazel. Filomena would help out with the kids, was the idea. At home, Cordelia would help with Fanny, and the boys would keep to themselves.Frank, Uly, and Hiram are the most powerful group of brothers in California. Frank is the looks, Uly is the brawn, and Hiram is the brains, although none of them are lacking in any of these attributes. They are best friends and inseparable. All of them still live at home.Filomena is quiet and withdrawn, and takes to her helping somewhat reluctantly before spending her free time reading. Felix, Ferdie and Clem are best friends, crawling around all through the woods, and Cordelia adopted Fanny as the triplets had been adopted by the older sisters.Clem had been named and taken care of by Hazel, who also took care of Ferdie. Cordelia was Flora's, and Mabey was Birdie's. All of them still spend a lot of time with their important older sisters, who still live nearby, and who all married veterans.Birdie is very newly married, only last month, to Carl Terry, a farmer and longtime family friend. Flora married Sly Thompson, a salesman, who was Bill's best friend growing up. Hazel married Luddie Kester, her longtime one-legged sweetheart, whom she met volunteering at the veteran's hospital years ago.Bill had a broken leg when the war broke out; as he was recovering, he met Zetta Zinks, a fiery war wife who convinced him to put off going to war for several months to wait for "conditions to improve," because she kept hearing from her husband how bad things were at the front. When he was killed, she wailed and wailed and convinced him not to go at all, because she was in love with him and her daughter didn't have a father. They quietly eloped and moved to Canada, where Zetta grew up and had family. The Jessups were scandalized and did not extend any efforts at communication, especially since Wheeler had been at the front since only a few months after the triplets were born.
