Story for Rounds 8 & 9
Wow, eleven years have passed and there have been many changes to the Royal family!
After giving birth to three daughters, Prince Bastian finally has a son. Not that it really mattered, Princess Irene would reign after him unless she proved herself unfit. Little Prince Charles was named after his Aunt Lys, deceased Uncle Sylvester, Uncle Nioclás, Grandfather King Oliver, and father Bastian. Princess Meg feels that using family names shows a strong family unity, and has made a point to do so on all of her children. Where Irene was a serious, bookish child, and Oriana and Seraphina were content to play little mama's with their family of dolls, Charles was as wild a boy as ever graced the the green earth.
Prince Bastian has been more and more of a co-ruler over the years. King Oliver had a mild stroke 9 years ago. He was able to make a complete recovery, but has had to let his son take over many of the day-to-day duties involved in running Kingdom Eriden. It is speculated that King Oliver will step down in favor of Prince Bastian within the next 5-10 years, maybe less...
Princess Lys and Prince Nioclás were thrilled that their nephew was named after them. They dote on all of their nieces and nephews. This is even more true after the doctors telling them both that they are infertile and will never have children. Princess Lys is saddened by this news, but content to spoil all of her nieces and nephews – after all, she has plenty around to do so with! Prince Nioclás, however, misses his family badly and would like to have some little ones of his own running around to make him feel even more at home. He has even suggested that they adopt, which initially upset Princess Lys. In the end, she could see how much this meant to Prince Nioclás, and agreed to do whatever they could.
Susanne and Rasmus are living what they consider to be an ideal life. Susanne is extremely glad that she was able to talk her father out of the grander titles he was considering. Marquise of Y'poanah is perfect for their little family. They live on the outskirts of the castle boundaries with a majority of the farm needs for the castle within their lands. Rasmus is still able to do his duties as Master of the Horse, and come home most nights. However, there are nights when he stays in the castle instead of make the hour ride. If he is going to be especially busy at the castle for an extended period of time, Susanne just packs up the rest of the family and goes to visit Princess Lys and the rest of the family.
Six years ago, they gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and decided to call her Rosalind. She is very much a little tomboy and loves to run and play with her big brother Marshall, older cousins Prince Charles and Prince Cristóbal. Princess Yolanda is too much of a lady to interest Rosalind – she won't even climb a tree or dig up vegetables in the garden for fear of getting dirty! And the little Prince Arthur and Princess Felicia are perfect to dote upon, but too little to take fishing yet.
Queen Vera still morns the loss of her jovial-spirited Silvester. However, she doesn't live within that sadness, instead focusing on her other three children's happiness.
Prince Markus met the most enchanting young woman at Princess Irene's 1st year celebration. Leocadia was unlike anybody else he had ever known. She was exotic and beautiful, had a wonderful personality with a quick wit, and was always ready to see even the most plain and ordinary as wonderful. Leocadia was not quite 2 years older then Markus, and the eldest child of the neighboring Kingdom of Bryony. However, there was a very strict patriarchal rule in Bryony, and she would never hold a title above Infanta unless she married into the nobility of Bryony. That doesn't mean that she doesn't have a very strong political force however. With only two brothers, and both younger, if anything would happen to them or their future families, the next King of Bryony would most likely come from a marriage to one of her children.
It was for this reason that many of the nobles fought against her marriage outside of the Bryony nobility. Infanta Leocadia just laughed at it all as nonsense, and would not hear of any other suitors. After a year of futile attempts to get her to consider marrying one of the many nobles, or somebody in their family, King Cristóbal finally gave his consent for her to marry Prince Markus. Secretly, he was very pleased with the arrangement. While it was unlikely that Prince Markus would inherit the kingdom of Eriden, he was the second son of the current King and a very advantageous match for his daughter. Plus, his only daughter's happiness meant a great deal to him.
Prince Markus and Infanta Leocadia were married within a month, and had their first child 10 months later. Prince Markus couldn't deny his lovely wife anything, and let her have the final say in both children's names. Leocadia chose first names to honor her distant mother and father, middle names to honor Prince Markus' more immediate mother and father, and two religious names that had significant meaning to Markus and herself. The nobles of Bryony felt that Leocadia's name choices reflected her steadfast and exclusive loyalty to the Kingdom of Bryony. Infanta Leocadia was in fact still loyal to the Kingdom of Bryony, but she was also loyal to her husband and his family.
Princess Yolanda was a very frilly sort of girl, and only interested in very frilly sort of girl activities. About the only activity that she enjoyed doing with Princess Irene was reading. However, she did sometimes enjoy playing house-type games with Oriana and Seraphina. Charles, Marshall, and Rosalind were all too wild and in love with the outdoors for her to find much in common with, and Arthur and Felicia were much too young for her to find anything in common with. In fact, Princess Yolanda's favorite person was her cousin Benigna – who was in fact her mother's distant cousin's daughter. Benigna's mom traveled with Infanta Leocadia as a companion and has stayed as she also found a husband in the kingdom of Eriden.
Little Prince Kris is a combination of a dignified little gentleman, or a fun-loving active little boy – depending on who he is playing with. When with his sister or Princess’ Irene, Oriana or Seraphina he acts very much like a miniature of his father. However, when with his cousins Marshall, Rosalind or little Prince Charles he acts just as wild as they do!
Princess Edith met her husband for the first time during her brother’s funeral. She was too grief-stricken to remember anything, but he remembered her. In fact, he found himself so enchanted with the grieving princess, that he soon discovered that he yearned for another site of her. He waited a year, and then two. Finally, he had all buy convinced himself that it was a simple infatuation when he was called to attend a festivity honoring the first birthday of Princess’ Oriana and Seraphina and little Marshall. Upon his second glimpse, he knew that he was in love. Princess Edith also saw him at this time, and found him completely fascinating. It took another 3 years before Arthur decided to try and court the petite princess. Princess Edith received him with much eagerness, and a marriage was arranged almost before a year was out!
Three years ago, Princess Edith gave birth to twins! The son was named after his father, and the daughter was named to honor her deceased twin and her mother. Both twins are typical 3 year-olds and very much into mischief! They both have their deceased uncle’s smile – which delights their grandmother to no end!
In fact, Queen Vera is almost completely happy with where her children have found their happiness. There is one bleak spot though, and that is with Princess Teresia’s choice in husband. There is something sinister about him, but Queen Vera isn’t sure what. Until she can figure out what is making her uneasy, she will try to not let this anxious feeling overcome Teresia’s joy.
Is the dark cloud gone from the Kingdom of Eriden… or only asleep and waiting…
