Ana's pregnancy was unexpected. She and Nathaniel had been together for so long that they both accepted that biological children were not an option for them and so contemplated adoption. They were absolutely thrilled at the idea of having their own incarnation of their love and devotion. Carden was born a vampire; surprising to Ana but not so much for Nathaniel. Raising a newborn vampire was challenging in that they had no idea how to care for their son. Being a new parent was one thing but being a new parent to an atypical baby was on a completely different plane. They worked together as a team and eventually figured out together what their child needed. This seemed to strengthen their already close bond.
