Twist:
Many things have happened over the last 5 years. About 3 years ago, you moved to Italy, France, or Spain (house would be 5 bedroom, 3 bath in each). Which one did you move to and why?
After Elsie was born, money was getting tighter. Since the children were still so young, there was no way I could go back to work because daycare expenses would still be so high even if Donnie was in kindergarten most of the day. Luckily, Jon was offered a promotion but it was for overseas. European leaders needed help with environmental analyses and Jon was up for it (the pay was almost triple what his salary was now!). “Italy?” I gulped. “You’ve always wanted to travel, right?” “Yeah,” I breathed, “but not with the kids.” Away to Italy we went. We were helped in finding a house (a nice villa in Lombardia) and learned as much Italian as we could. When we arrived, we instantly fell in love with the scenery, the people, the culture.
About a month after you moved, you rushed your second oldest to the hospital. His heart is failing and they put in a pacemaker. How does that make you feel?
We weren’t settle into our new home for long when Alex became gravely ill. At first, we thought it was a cold but the symptoms progressed and his breathing became extremely labored. His fever was extremely high and he was having real trouble breathing. We rushed him to the emergency room and after extensive tests we were told that Alex was going into heart failure and needed surgery to insert a pacemaker in his heart. “He will be fine,” the Italian doctor assured us as they wheeled my baby into the O.R. At this point, I wish we were home, in the States. At least I wouldn’t have to stumble upon my words when trying to talk to the Italian doctors and nurses. I was frustrated, scared and a nervous wreck.
After a month he recovers perfectly but that is not the end of your troubles. Soon you get a call from home saying that your niece’s parents are going to jail for child abuse. The court wants you to take her in. When you go to bring her home, you find her bruised, with a broken rib. How does that make you feel?
After our scare with Alex, we received a phone call from an attorney from the U.S. My eldest brother Chris and his (now) wife, Lindsay, had been tried and convicted of possession along with child abuse and the attorney said that full custody had been awarded to Jon and me. I couldn’t believe that Chris would ever do such a thing to his daughter. I couldn’t believe it. I found out that Lindsay began abusing pain medications and then Chris got involved, too. They had been abandoning Mya to buy their fixes and then would beat her when she “misbehaved” when they left her alone. I was infuriated. Little Mya needed a home (and we were more than happy to give her one) but they asked that we give her a new name as well. “Why?” I asked. “Mrs. Corbin, Mr. and Mrs. Samuels have been told that they will be released on parole for good behavior in 2 to three years on condition that they stay away from Mya. We feel that the child needs protection from them just in case they decide to come back for her and possibly gain custody. I would hate to see this happen to her once more.” I was infuriated when I saw her – beaten and broken, literally. We legally changed her name from Mya Noelle to Angela Fernanda (the Italian influence) Gracie Corbin and Elsie immediately started calling her “Fern.” The two girls got along great. I was somewhat relieved – Elsie and Fern would grow up together like sisters. I never had such a “luxury” with playing with a full-time sister as well as mud-pies and Barbie dolls. Donnie and Alex questioned why she was so bruised and I told them that her mommy and daddy didn’t care for her like “Daddy and I” care for you so she was staying with us. From that point on, they were protective big brothers, always trying their best to make her comfortable and happy as possible. Always allowing her to play their games and sharing whatever toy or candy they had.
About 9 months ago you found yourself pregnant once again. Were you pleased? What about the kids? Your hubby? Adopted niece? Other family?
When I found out that I was pregnant again, Jon and I were actually pretty pleased. The other pregnancies we had been a bit wary but everything was coming along beautifully even if we were thousands of miles away from our home and culture. Elsie and Fern were all about some new baby, as little girls usually are. Donnie and Alex really didn’t care one way or the other but they started to get excited towards the end of the pregnancy. We decided choose Latin/Italian influenced names - Sébastien Zacharias Maximilian “Max”.
Anything else you want to say? Also have any ideas for the next rounds?
Not at this time and I have no clue! Lol If I do think of something, I let you know
