After the fiasco with Princess Lys, Princess Susanne felt the pressures of being a princess were just too much. She started spending more and more time outdoors and away from the castle. Much of this time was spent riding her horse in the royal woods. She soon developed a close relationship with the Rasmus, the Master of the Horse.
When Princess Susanne found out that her father was looking into arranging a marriage, she fell apart. She ran to the stables to take her horse out for a ride. However, when she got there, she was in no condition to go riding. Rasmus took her for a walk among the gardens and they talked. Soon, friendship started turning to love. Rasmus refused to acknowledge it, however, knowing that Princess Susanne would be marring a prince.
When King Oliver asked Susanne her opinions on a few princes', she decided that she was done being forced to live her life within the confines of being a princess. She told her father that she was in love with Rasmus and planned to abdicate so that they could marry. While it wasn't ideal, King Oliver remembered his love with Oriana and agreed completely with his daughter. Both the Kingdom and the Court, however, think that Princess Susanne is making the biggest mistake ever!
Princess Lys settled down after her close call with Duke Karsten. When she found that her father was looking for potential husbands, she took to her books and started reading up on neighboring kingdoms. When King Oliver suggested keeping the arrangement with Lord Crispian, Lys disagreed. She told her father that an arrangement with the Kingdom of Áed would be advantages. Shocked, her father had to agree. It was soon settled that Lys would marry the youngest prince from the Kingdom of Áed.
Markus, Silvester and Edith were out at the lake during the fall when Markus and Silvester decided to see who could swim across it the fastest. Edith pleaded with her brothers to not do this on such a cool day, but they just laughed and told her that it wasn't too cold for them! Markus started to cram up just over halfway across and went under. Silvester dove after him, and managed to bring the unconscious Markus to the surface. Princess Edith dove in at that point and helped her brother bring Markus ashore.
Silvester then stayed with Markus while Edith ran to the castle to get help. When the castle servants saw the "frail" Edith run in soaking wet on a day with storm clouds gathering, they immeaditly made her sit by the kitchen fire with blankets while she chattered out what happened to her brothers. Servants rushed to the lake and brought both boys back to the castle.
Edith was already in a warm bath when Silvester and Markus came back. Markus had started breathing again, but was still disoriented. Silvester, accepting only a blanket, insisted that he would stay with his brother until after the doctors had seen to him. After the doctors check Markus over and pronounced that everything seemed okay, Silvester finally let himself be led to his hot bath.
All three children ended up with server colds. The servants and doctors spent much of their time rushing between Edith and Markus. Silvester, feeling guilty for getting the two of them sick, lied to the doctors and told them that he felt fine. And then, one night when the servants were rushing between Edith and Markus, Silvester slipped into a coma. Two days later he stopped breathing. There was nothing the doctors could do.
Edith was heartbroken and very possibly could of died from the grief. However, her family rallied around her, and the grief was shared and lessened. King Oliver told her how he felt when his first wife passed away, and how lucky he's been to find love with her mother (and how that never could have happened without the grief). Markus shared her guilt over everybody worrying over them instead of about Silvester. And her mother shared a loss almost as great as her own.
For now, the Kingdom is in a bittersweet sort of mood. There are two upcoming weddings, but there was also a funeral of a Prince much too young to die...
